McIlroy and DeChambeau’s Ongoing Rivalry Ahead of Ryder Cup
Rory McIlroy has kept the competitive banter alive, especially as the Ryder Cup approaches. This week, at Bethpage Black, he aimed some remarks at a particular member of Team USA—Bryson DeChambeau.
Earlier this summer, DeChambeau mentioned he was eager to engage in some friendly trash-talking with McIlroy during the Ryder Cup. McIlroy, however, seemed to dismiss that notion.
In a recent interview, McIlroy reflected on their rivalry, suggesting that DeChambeau often tries to divert attention by mentioning others. “I think the only way he gets his attention is to mention someone else,” he noted, implying that DeChambeau might bring him or Scotty Scheffler into the conversation just to stir the pot.
The tension between McIlroy and DeChambeau has intensified since they faced off at the Masters in April. That event was a significant one for McIlroy, as he secured his first green jacket, achieving a career grand slam. Notably, they were paired together during that round.
During the final round, DeChambeau expressed surprise that he hadn’t really spoken with McIlroy, which he found odd. But McIlroy had a different take on it, stating, “I’m not trying to be his best friend,” emphasizing the competitive nature of their relationship.
Things flared up again during the 2024 US Open, where DeChambeau emerged victorious after McIlroy faltered in the final round. Their rivalry has also been fueled by McIlroy’s outspoken criticism of Liv Golf, which DeChambeau is currently part of.
This week at Bethpage Black, the atmosphere is expected to be electric, with both players likely to engage in some playful banter—fueled further by a crowd of about 50,000 spectators over the three days of the tournament.
In their last encounter during the 2023 Ryder Cup in Rome, Team USA lost to Team Europe. Following that defeat, McIlroy boldly declared their intent to come back stronger this time as they play away from home.
