Why Charlie Kirk’s death feels intimate — even if you never knew him

Why Charlie Kirk's death feels intimate — even if you never knew him

Many people across the country have expressed disbelief over the impact Charlie Kirk’s death has had on them. It’s surprising how deeply someone can be affected by the loss of someone they didn’t personally know.

The grief and anger surrounding his violent death resonate with countless individuals, bringing forth a palpable sense of shock and loss. Charlie Kirk was more than just an influencer, and his murder was far from a senseless act.

Charlie represented the truth, and as we know, the Father of Lies despises it. Jesus emphasized that being spiritually neutral is simply not an option.

This tragedy touches on something deeper and more spiritual.

1. You’re More Connected to Charlie Than You Think

Many of us formed a personal connection with Charlie. We listened to him, consumed his content for hours, and somehow built a bond—even without ever meeting him in person.

It makes sense, especially since Charlie was genuinely likable—like a brother or a close friend. It might feel a little odd, but it’s actually quite natural.

There’s also a spiritual dimension to this sense of loss. Our connection reflects a broader spiritual unity. The apostle Paul noted that while there are many parts in the body, they all work together as one (1 Corinthians 12:12–13).

The same Holy Spirit that was present in Charlie is alive in all believers. For Christians, Charlie feels like a brother in Christ. Thus, when he suffered, we all felt the sting. His murder resonates with our shared Holy Spirit. The pain we experience together showcases our unity in faith. When one grieves, we all grieve.

2. We Are in Spiritual Warfare

Charlie’s murder wasn’t just a political act; it was an attack by evil.

The same malevolent forces that persecuted Stephen and Jesus have targeted Charlie. It’s unsettling to realize we are caught in the middle of a spiritual battle.

Ephesians 6:12 reminds us that our true enemies are not flesh and blood but the spiritual forces of evil. Charlie stood for truth, and the Father of Lies will always oppose it. Jesus made it abundantly clear—spiritual neutrality simply cannot exist.

For those aligned with God, we combat these enemies through the Bible’s power and the Holy Spirit, not through violence.

3. We Lament with His Family

While we may feel lost, our hearts ache for his family—especially his courageous wife, Erica, and his young children, who now must grow up knowing their father’s greatness from afar. Our sorrow for them is an expression of Christian compassion.

Romans 12:15 instructs us to empathize with both those who rejoice and those who weep. Our grief for the Kirk family is a righteous reaction to a profound heartache. We should continue praying for them, trusting that the Lord cares for Charlie’s family even more than we do.

This tragedy also prompts us to reflect on our own families and the fleeting nature of life.

4. Murder Violates the Image of God

A widely circulated video of Charlie’s death has left a dark imprint on many of us. It is traumatic to witness such violence, especially against those created in God’s image.

Murder is an affront to both humanity and divinity, which is why many support the death penalty.

Genesis 9:6 states that taking a life warrants the forfeiture of one’s own. This reinforces the sacredness of life and underscores the serious consequences of severe crimes.

Charlie’s death is a stark reminder of the fragility of our earthly lives; however, our hope resides in Jesus Christ. Someday, our mortal bodies will be transformed into immortality, and death will be vanquished (1 Corinthians 15:52–57).

5. It Could Have Been You

This wasn’t just a political assassination—Charlie was not an elected official. He stood firmly for the truth.

All that he represented was rooted in his faith in Jesus Christ. His worldview was shaped by the Bible, making him a remarkable voice in American history. He was essentially fighting to liberate Americans from a culture of deception.

Another Charlie may not come along, but we can honor his memory by carrying the torch for truth.

As fellow believers, we share in the very truths for which he was attacked.

This raises a sobering question: “Am I prepared to stand up for this truth, even at the cost of my life?” Our answer must be a strong “yes.”

Jesus said in Matthew 16:25 that whoever loses their life for Him will truly find it. We cannot let fear quiet our voices; we must recommit to our righteous causes.

Just as Stephen’s martyrdom led to Paul’s ministry, Charlie’s sacrifice can inspire countless others to boldly proclaim the truth.

6. We Lament the Lost Potential

Charlie was a gifted leader who significantly changed the political and cultural landscapes of our nation. Many had hopes that he might someday ascend to the presidency. His unexpected death evokes sadness over the unrealized potentials of what he might have accomplished.

Yet, we can trust in God’s plan. Psalm 33:11 reminds us that His plans stand firm forever, and His purposes cannot be shaken. Although we are stunned by Charlie’s passing, God is not. This tragedy does not derail His agenda. The Kingdom of God isn’t advanced by one “superman,” but by ordinary people empowered by His Spirit.

7. We Can Feel Helpless

In the midst of such heartbreaking events, it’s natural to feel powerless. We may have prayed for miracles, but God did not restore Charlie to life.

It’s okay to feel disappointed, but try not to hold that disappointment against God. He remains good, even when our circumstances seem dire. Feeling helpless doesn’t equate to hopelessness. We can still contribute meaningfully by standing for the truth, sharing the gospel, nurturing our families, and fulfilling our civic duties. God will do His part.

8. The Evil One is Celebrating

Celebratory remarks from Charlie’s detractors reveal the darkness in their hearts. These individuals are blinded by sin, labeling good as evil and refusing to see reason—only God can change them.

Remember, our time on earth is limited, but eternity lasts forever.

As Jesus instructed in Luke 6:27–28, it’s essential to understand that the opposition celebrating Charlie’s death indicates the significant impact he was making. The devil rejoiced when Jesus was crucified, but that celebration was short-lived, while our victory is eternal.

9. Earthly Justice is Incomplete

While the news that Charlie’s murderer has been apprehended brings some comfort, it does not bring him back. No amount of earthly retribution can fully satisfy the gravity of such a crime. That’s why we place our hope in God’s ultimate justice.

The Bible assures us that Jesus will return to judge both righteousness and unrighteousness. Those who trust in Him will find forgiveness and eternal rewards, while those who reject Him will face punishment.

We can be thankful for a judicial system that holds murderers accountable, yet our ultimate peace stems from knowing that God will bring perfect resolution on the final day.

10. Life is Short, but Eternity is Eternal

Charlie was only 31—young, healthy, and full of life. His untimely death serves as a stark reminder that our days are numbered.

As Psalm 39:4–5 implores, “Teach me, O Lord, to number my days so that I may gain a heart of wisdom.” This tragedy should urge all of us to take action—to not waste our lives on fleeting matters. We shouldn’t be mere bystanders.

We may grieve, but it should not be as those without hope. We hold the blessed assurance that for Charlie and all believers, being absent from the body means being present with the Lord.

While his assassination was meant to silence him, the enemy miscalculated. His martyrdom has awakened a dormant giant. Let our grief drive us to strengthen our resolve. We will cry, heal, fight, and in the end, we will triumph. We might face challenges, but we’ll emerge victorious.

We will not be silenced, and the truth about Charlie’s death will resound louder than ever!
