NFL Teams Struggling After Week 3: A Look at 0-3 Comebacks

As Week 3 of the NFL season wraps up, it’s not great news for teams like the Dolphins, Jets, Texans, Titans, and Saints. Historically, bouncing back from three losses to make the playoffs is extremely tough—only four teams have managed to do so since the league’s expansion in 1990. It’s not a rosy outlook for the underperformers.

Reflecting on those four teams, it’s interesting to explore how they turned their seasons around. What were their strategies? Fans of the Texans, who hope for better days, are looking towards 2025 for a potential playoff run.

1992 San Diego Chargers – Capitalizing on Defense

The Chargers from ’92 were an unusual case — a notably poor offensive team by the standards of the day. In fact, only ten quarterbacks surpassed 3,000 passing yards that season, and Stan Humphries, the Chargers’ QB, was the only one with a negative TD/INT ratio to make the playoffs, throwing 16 touchdowns against 18 interceptions.

You might think they had a strong running game, but their leading rusher, Marion Butts, only accumulated 809 rushing yards at a disappointing average. This bleak offensive performance contributed to an 0-4 start, scoring just 29 points in those games while allowing 95. Not exactly a contender, right?

However, after their early-season break, the team emerged revitalized with a fierce defense. They transformed from 3-4 to 4-3, showcasing one of the most formidable pass rushes in history, featuring players like Leslie O’Neill and Chris Mims. By this time, they were generating immense pressure, which helped compensate for their initial offensive struggles.

In fact, their defense allowed an average of just 12.1 points per game for the remainder of the season, proving that if they scored a few points, victory was likely.

1995 Detroit Lions – A Season of Magic

Barry Sanders is often hailed as one of the greatest running backs in NFL history. In 1995, he churned out 1,500 yards and 11 touchdowns. But it’s the quarterback, Scott Mitchell, who became the surprising star that year. Initially drafted by the Dolphins, Mitchell had played backup to Dan Marino before landing with the Lions, where he wasn’t seen as a standout option.

His start to the season wasn’t promising; the team stumbled to an 0-3 record. But then, everything clicked into place. Not only did Mitchell thrive, but he also had powerful receivers like Herman Moore and Brett Perriman at his disposal, fueled by Sanders’s brilliance. The outcome? Mitchell threw for 4,338 yards with 38 touchdowns and only 12 interceptions, leading the Lions to the playoffs, although they would face elimination in the wild card round.

1998 Buffalo Bills – Flutie’s Resurgence

It was a turbulent time for the Buffalo Bills at the start of 1998. With head coach Marv Levy retiring and the shadow of Jim Kelly’s departure, the season appeared to begin with hurdles. Wade Phillips took over as coach and made some bold decisions, including bringing in Rob Johnson as starting quarterback. But, things went sideways when Johnson got injured.

Enter Doug Flutie. After years away from the NFL, Flutie switched gears and became a surprise hero for the team. He started ten games and threw for 2,711 yards with 20 touchdowns, rejuvenating the roster. Even in his late thirties, Flutie led the Bills to the playoffs, showcasing that sometimes experience can outweigh youth.

2018 Houston Texans – Projecting Forward

More recently, the Texans showcase yet another comeback narrative. In 2018, Bill O’Brien was in his fifth year as head coach but still sought a long-term solution at quarterback. After starting the season with three consecutive losses, they began to find their rhythm with Deshaun Watson at the helm. Watson quickly proved to be one of the league’s most effective quarterbacks, eventually leading the team to a nine-game winning streak and an 11-5 finish, although they were eliminated in the wild card round.

So, while the prospects for teams like the Dolphins and Jets aren’t exactly shining bright this year, history tells us that anything can happen in the NFL. Perhaps one of these struggling teams will find their own path to redemption. Who knows?
