Bruce Pearl steps down as Auburn coach and declines Senate candidacy

Auburn’s men’s basketball coach, Bruce Pearl, has been speculated as a potential Republican candidate for the Senate seat in Alabama. However, after announcing his retirement, he stated that a future in Washington, D.C. isn’t in the cards for him.

In a video announcement, he mentioned, “I know that many of you have probably prayed about my running for the United States Senate.”

He explained that his decision would mean leaving Auburn, but he has been given the chance to stay and serve as an ambassador for the university instead. “I need to focus now on being a great husband, a great father, and the best grandfather I can,” he added.

There had been discussions about Pearl potentially taking over the seat of Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL), who is seeking the gubernatorial position in Alabama in 2026. Notably, Tuberville had previously been Auburn’s head football coach from 1999 to 2008.

Earlier this year, Tuberville pointed to Pearl’s significant annual salary of $6 million, hinting that he might want to deter Pearl from pursuing a Senate run. “The compensation is a little different,” Tuberville remarked, indicating that he valued Pearl’s contributions to Auburn and believed he should remain there.

An insider from the Jewish community reported recently that Pearl had backed away from the Senate race.

As a Jewish man and a strong supporter of both Israel and former President Trump, Pearl has been actively involved in various initiatives, including serving on the board of the American Israel Education Association, which focuses on promoting strong U.S.-Israel relations.

Last week, he expressed his views through a Washington Times opinion piece advocating for Israel to reclaim sovereignty over Judea and Samaria.

In February, Pearl had also shown his support for Trump’s appointment of Dan Bongino as FBI deputy director, praising him as “a friend and great patriot” on social media.

Pearl, who previously coached at Southern Indiana, Milwaukee, and Tennessee, is the winningest coach in Auburn’s history. Over his 11-year tenure with the Tigers, he achieved three regular-season titles, two tournament titles, and two appearances in the Final Four. Last season, Auburn set program records with 32 wins, reaching the national semifinals.

Auburn’s season kicks off on October 15th with an exhibition game against Oklahoma. Following Pearl’s retirement, his son Stephen Pearl, who was serving as an assistant coach, has stepped up as the new head coach.
