US and Allies Vow to Defend NATO Territory After Russian Airspace Violation

In New York, newly appointed UN ambassador Mike Waltz issued a stern warning on Monday, emphasizing that the United States and its allies are prepared to defend “any inch” of NATO territory following a recent breach of Estonian airspace by Russian fighters.

“The United States stands firmly with our NATO allies in response to these airspace violations,” Waltz stated. He underscored the urgent need for Russia to cease its dangerous actions.

This pronouncement came shortly after Waltz’s confirmation to the Senate last Friday. It follows a recent incident where a Russian MIG-31 jet flew into Estonian outer space—arguably the closest approach to the Baltic parliament building in years—raising concerns that Russia is testing NATO’s resolve.

Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsakna revealed that the jets were armed and violated Estonia’s airspace for 12 minutes.

Tsakna pointed out the ongoing reality that Russia remains a permanent member of the UN Security Council, despite its continued military actions in Ukraine and now its encroachment into NATO territory.

Under Article 5 of the NATO treaty, any armed attacks against a member state in Europe or North America are treated as attacks against all. This means an attack on one member obligates a collective response from others.

Waltz, who previously served as a State representative in Florida and was a national security adviser under President Donald Trump, had his Senate confirmation narrowly approved with a 47-43 vote.

It remains uncertain if a subsequent vote to confirm him as the US representative for the General Assembly will take place, which could potentially impact his participation in UNGA.

Recently, at least 19 Russian drones were also reported to have crossed into Polish airspace shortly after a meeting between Polish President Karol Naulocky and President Trump. Romania has indicated that a drone of Russian origin was found on its territory as well.

In response to the accusations regarding the airspace violations, Russia dismissed the claims as “unfounded.” Dmitry Polyanskiy, Russia’s first deputy permanent representative to the UN, characterized the concerns from Estonia as mere “hysteria.” He argued that anti-Russian sentiments in Europe are pervasive, suggesting that European perceptions are skewed against Russia.

On Monday, an emergency session of the UN Security Council was convened at Tallinn’s request to address the incursion. Tsakna articulated that “Russia’s reckless actions are not just a violation of international law, but also a troubling escalation that risks drawing the region nearer to conflict than it has been in recent years.” He stressed that such provocations undermine global efforts to resolve the conflict between Russia and Ukraine and restore peace.
