Trump issues order designating Antifa as a domestic terrorist group

On Monday, President Trump issued an order categorizing the anti-fascist movement known as ANTIFA as a domestic terrorist organization. This decision follows the murder of Charlie Kirk, amid promises to take more stringent actions against leftist groups.

The order officially labels ANTIFA as a “domestic terrorist organization,” which would provide government agencies with extensive authority to monitor and control activities involving ANTIFA members, particularly in relation to any material support they provide.

According to the order, ANTIFA aims to undermine government and law enforcement through “illegal means to organize and execute national violence and terrorist campaigns.”

“Individuals associated with ANTIFA will collaborate with other organizations to further promote political violence and to stifle legitimate political discourse,” the order claims. “This coordinated effort to achieve policy objectives through intimidation and coercion qualifies as domestic terrorism.”

This move by Trump will likely spark debate and criticism regarding its legality and practical implementation. Experts point out that ANTIFA lacks a centralized leadership, which raises questions about whether the order can effectively target left-wing organizations.

Moreover, the extent of Trump’s authority to designate groups as domestic terrorists remains uncertain, potentially leading to legal disputes over this action.

In response to Kirk’s assassination, Trump, along with conservative activist and Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk and other White House officials, has vowed to take action against leftist groups accused of promoting violence in the U.S.

Vice President Vance indicated that the administration may seek to cut funding to left-wing organizations, with particular focus on ANTIFA.

Republicans have criticized ANTIFA activists for riots that erupted in major cities following George Floyd’s death in 2020, and the term has come to be used more broadly to describe left-wing protestors nationwide.
