Trump to Award Ben Carson Presidential Medal of Freedom
This weekend, President Donald Trump announced his plans to present the Presidential Medal of Freedom— the highest civilian honor in the U.S.— to Ben Carson, who served as the 17th Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
During an event held at the American Cornerstone Institute in Mount Vernon, Virginia, Trump highlighted Carson’s diverse accomplishments as a neurosurgeon, author, and influential conservative speaker, as well as his contributions in urban development.
As he shared this news, Trump expressed his surprise for Carson, saying, “He didn’t know this. I hope he’s happy.” The announcement came amid other accolades being handed out this month.
Carson, now 74, previously ran against Trump for the Republican presidential nomination back in 2016 and later became HUD secretary in Trump’s first term. Over time, their relationship evolved from rivals in politics to close allies, with Carson even chairing the National Faith Advisory Board during Trump’s 2024 campaign.
Established in 1963, the Presidential Medal of Freedom honors individuals who have made significant contributions to national interests, security, world peace, and cultural efforts. Throughout his first term, Trump awarded the medal to 24 individuals and has already named two recipients upon returning to office.
Previous Recipients
- Barack Obama – 118 recipients
- Bill Clinton – 89 recipients
- Joe Biden – 56 recipients
While Trump did not specify the exact date for Carson’s award presentation, other recipients’ ceremonies have already been scheduled. Earlier this month, Trump also mentioned plans to honor former Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who recently suffered serious injuries in a car accident, describing him as a “great American patriot.”
Moreover, during September 11th commemorations at the Pentagon, Trump spoke of honoring conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who had passed away earlier in the month.
