As the NFL season hits its third week, the landscape remains murky, and it’s hard to say if we’re getting any closer to figuring out the strong teams from the weak. Yet, amidst the uncertainty, there were standout performances worthy of individual accolades this week.
We’ve highlighted players who surprised us, as well as those who either fell short or helped their teams turn the tides in closely contested games. Here’s our take on the highlights.
Best Coach of Week 3: Ben Johnson
Week 3 presented a significant challenge for Ben Johnson in his coaching role.
And he managed to rise to the occasion.
After the Chicago Bears lost their first two games, they faced scrutiny heading into their match against the Detroit Lions, Johnson’s former team. The Bears ended up defeating the Dallas Cowboys decisively, with a score of 31-14.
Caleb Williams had an impressive performance, completing 19 of 28 passes for 298 yards and four touchdowns. Johnson’s biggest goal this season was to get a win, and he certainly saw progress from his quarterback.
Best Newcomer of Week 3: Mason Graham
Although many might overlook Graham due to playing on a struggling Browns team, he showcased his potential against the Packers, proving he can create chaos on the defensive line with Miles Garrett.
Graham was a game-changer, even if the stats only show three tackles and half a sack.
His pass rushing win percentage was the highest among defensive tackles this season, surpassing the previous leader Milton Williams by a considerable margin. It’s quite clear that he’s making a significant impact.
Graham is a crucial factor for the Packers’ success, and his future is bright.
Best Offensive Player of Week 3: Caleb Williams
This was the game Bears fans had been eagerly anticipating.
Caleb Williams seemed to find his rhythm.
He finished the game completing 19 of 28 passes for 298 yards and four touchdowns.
Johnson noted how impressed he was with the offensive play from Williams and the rest of the team.
He mentioned, “He does a much better job of getting us in and out of the huddle. We had a smoother operation compared to the first two games, but there’s always room for improvement.” Johnson indicated some plays still needed refining.
He added that Williams has shown growth not only in learning the system but also in his execution and footwork.
Best Defensive Player of Week 3: Isaiah Rogers
As noted earlier, Isaiah Rogers single-handedly led the charge against the Cincinnati Bengals.
Sure, his team, the Minnesota Vikings, contributed, but in the first half, Rogers notched two defensive touchdowns—one off a pick-six and another after recovering a fumble from tight end Noah Fant.
Rogers kept the momentum going, forcing yet another fumble from Jamaar Chase.
By the end of the game, Minnesota celebrated a decisive 48-10 victory, with Rogers contributing two touchdowns, two forced fumbles, and two passes defended.
He certainly earned his accolades this week.
Best Special Teams Player of Week 3: Jordan Davis
Sunday was rife with thrilling moments from special teams.
But none stood out quite like Jordan Davis blocking a crucial game-winning field goal attempt, sealing a stunning comeback for the Philadelphia Eagles.
He also returned a fumble for a touchdown, clocking in at 18.59 mph during the run.
Week 3 MVP: Justin Herbert
The Los Angeles Chargers are 3-0 for the first time since 2002.
To put it in perspective, that was the year when Drew Brees was their QB, George W. Bush was president, and people were finishing up law school in a much different world.
A lot has changed since then.
Thanks to a comeback win against the Denver Broncos, the Chargers are now unbeaten and leading the AFC West. Herbert had a rocky start but was nearly flawless in the fourth quarter, even under heavy pressure from the Broncos.
His impressive throw to Keenan Allen had only a 16.7% chance of completion according to stats, yet he executed it against one of the NFL’s top defenses in the clutch.
So yes, there’s definitely something to celebrate for the Chargers this season.
