Kamala Harris Reflects on Debate Disappointments in New Book

Former Vice President Kamala Harris shared insights into her debate experiences with running mate Tim Waltz in her new book, “107 Days.” She expressed frustration with the performance of Senator JD Vance, who, according to her, disappointed her expectations.

In the book, Harris mentions that Governor Waltz should be more assertive by October 1, 2024. During one debate, she found herself turning to her husband in discomfort, observing, “As Tim nodded along with JD’s facade of bipartisanship, I whispered to Doug, ‘What’s going on?'” She felt that Waltz was misled by Vance’s seemingly smooth demeanor.

Harris remarked, “You’re not there to make friends with someone who’s attacking your running mate,” underscoring her concern for Waltz’s approach during the debate.

Reflecting on the situation, she noted that participating in such large debates isn’t easy. “We were supposed to be supporting Tim’s argument,” she lamented, adding it felt “close” but ultimately uneasy. Waltz, she said, seemed unprepared from the start, which she found disappointing, especially given his track record of effective communication in front of audiences.

Harris criticized Vance, labeling him a “shape shifter” and expressing her belief that he sidesteps important issues. She detailed how Waltz faltered when confronted with a question about his past experiences during a critical moment.

Harris also recounted an odd moment during a post-debate event. While her husband Doug and she shared a laugh after a live skit, she recalled spitting wine out of surprise but clarified that it was more of a dramatic response than an actual incident.

Despite the rocky debate, she reassured Waltz that their chances in the election would not hinge solely on that night’s performance. Harris acknowledged the struggles he faced, particularly in light of harsh critiques aimed at his record and family.

She shared some personal reflections, noting that the pressures of a political campaign can lead to familial strengths becoming perceived weaknesses. “Tim felt angry about the unfairness of it all,” she wrote, conveying a sense of empathy for his situation.

In choosing Waltz over other potential candidates, Harris emphasized the support she received from her close circle. She recalled debating with her husband, Doug, who had known another candidate, Josh, for a long time. Ultimately, she made the decision, wanting to trust her judgment rather than rely on outside opinions. “I had to focus on something tangible—like cooking a delicious, seasoned pork roast,” she added, illustrating the personal nature of her choice in a light-hearted way.
