Liberty splits from Sandy Brondello a year after winning their first WNBA championship

New York Liberty Parts Ways with Head Coach Sandy Brondello

The New York Liberty has made a notable change in their leadership. After nearly a year, they have decided to part ways with manager Sandy Brondello, who notably led the franchise to its first-ever WNBA championship.

On Tuesday, the team announced that they would not be renewing Brondello’s contract for the 2026 season. General Manager Jonathan Kolb reflected on her tenure, expressing gratitude for her significant contributions. “Sandy has been the most successful coach in our history, taking us to levels we never imagined possible,” he stated.

Brondello’s departure follows a playoff elimination, with the Liberty losing to the Phoenix Mercury in the first round last week. She described coaching the Liberty as a privilege, acknowledging the surprise and joy of winning the franchise’s first championship. “I hope the success of our team continues moving forward,” she noted.

Despite facing challenges, including injuries to key players, Brondello had led the Liberty to a playoff berth as the fifth seed this past season. Prior to joining New York in 2022, she had an eight-year record in Phoenix, where she also achieved a championship with the Mercury.

The team is now looking ahead as they navigate this transition in hopes of maintaining their momentum. It’s certainly an emotional moment for many involved, especially with Brondello’s impactful legacy at the helm.
