Trump’s Perspective on the Russia-Ukraine Conflict

On Tuesday afternoon, former President Donald Trump expressed his belief that Russia is unlikely to advance in its efforts against Ukraine. He seems to think that with support from Europe and the United States, Ukraine can reclaim its territory after a prolonged conflict.

“In my view, Ukraine can fight and eventually win back its original territory, especially with backing from the European Union. It’s clear that Russia understands the economic and military situations in Ukraine,” he stated.

Trump noted that **time, perseverance, and financial backing from Europe**—particularly NATO—are critical factors in this ongoing struggle.

However, there seems to be some ambiguity regarding when he believes the conflict began. Trump didn’t directly mention Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014—an event many Ukrainians see as the actual start of the hostilities. Instead, he may have alluded to eastern Ukraine, which has faced Russian occupation since February 2022. The Russian-speaking population there had been in conflict with the Ukrainian government for years.

When Russian president Vladimir Putin sent his forces into Ukraine, he purportedly declared two regions, Donetsk and Luhansk, as “independent republics.” Trump argued that Ukraine might actually have a solid chance of forcing the Russians out of the Donbas area.

“Why not?” he questioned. “This is a war where Russia should have projected strong military power, yet it’s like they’re a ‘paper tiger.’ It’s surprising.”

He went on to suggest that if the Russian people were fully aware of the war’s impact—like the dire economic conditions and long fuel queues—they might change their perspective on the conflict.

“Putin and Russia are definitely facing significant economic challenges, which is when Ukraine needs to seize the moment,” Trump emphasized.

“Regardless of the outcome, I wish the best for both nations. We’ll keep supplying NATO with the necessary arms to act as they see fit. Good luck to everyone involved!” he concluded.

This statement by Trump follows a reiteration from White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt.
