Authorities have rescued numerous neglected animals from various homes in New York, including a range of exotic species like peacocks, wallabies, tarantulas, and Australian bearded dragons.
Linda Hickey, 62, faces charges of animal neglect following a disturbing find in Warwick. Last year, over 100 other animals were discovered in poor condition. The Orange County Sheriff’s Office provided this update in a press release on Tuesday.
“This situation highlights the crucial role of community partnerships in tackling animal neglect,” stated Sheriff Paul Arteta. He emphasized the essential support from the Warwick Valley Humane Society and the Animal Nation, which enabled them to respond effectively and humanely, giving these animals a chance to heal.
Many of the animals were found in filthy cages, surrounded by feces and neglected conditions. Photos revealed rabbits with matted fur and other distressed animals.
Police started looking into Hickey’s residence on Old Dutch Hollow Road after receiving community complaints. In total, 106 animals were rescued from the property.
Following an arrest warrant executed on August 12, which stemmed from the ongoing investigation, a search warrant was carried out last week.
A total of 66 animals were seized during this operation, including rabbits, geese, parrots, raccoons, turtles, prairie dogs, guinea pigs, hamsters, ferrets, and various reptiles. The situation was quite overwhelming.
Just two days later, on September 18, another 18 animals were taken from Hickey’s home, according to law enforcement officials.
All rescued animals have been placed under veterinary care, providing them the attention they desperately needed. Meanwhile, Hickey has been indicted, and local building officials have condemned her property.
