Conservatives Respond to Charlie Kirk’s Assassination
After the tragic assassination of Charlie Kirk, conservatives are sharing messages of renewal. Two commentators mentioned how the right-wing response to Kirk’s death contrasts sharply with reactions to high-profile incidents involving police, like those of George Floyd and Michael Brown.
At a memorial event in Phoenix, Arizona, Kirk’s widow, Erika, noted that, “After Charlie’s assassination, there was no violence. No riots were seen.” She emphasized that, unlike past unrests, her husband’s legacy inspired a revival rather than chaos.
Post-assassination, many on social media remarked on the differing conservative reactions compared to the aftermath of George Floyd’s death in 2020, which ignited extensive protests and widespread destruction across various cities.
In her speech, Erika added, “We saw that my husband always prayed for him to see in this country. We witnessed the revival,” reflecting a specific hopefulness in mourning.
RNC representative Mehek Cook pointedly contrasted the reactions: “When Charlie Kirk was assassinated, conservatives didn’t riot, loot, or torch cities. We came together in prayer.” This underscores a belief that the right handles grief differently than the left, especially in the face of tragedy.
The violent protests following Floyd’s death resulted in billions of dollars in damages, while the conservative response to Kirk aimed at honoring his memory and promoting peaceful dialogue. “In contrast to the left-wing reaction to George Floyd in 2020, the riots tore through cities,” Cook stated, highlighting the enduring impact of those events.
Charlie Kirk’s friend and commentator Brillin Hollyhand expressed sorrow but noted his immediate thought was prayer rather than destruction. He plans to collaborate with Kirk’s organization, TPUSA, to keep alive the values he championed.
Erika Kirk’s message of forgiveness towards her husband’s killer resonated with many, as she told the crowd at the memorial, “Our Savior said, ‘Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing.’” This unifying sentiment drew a standing ovation, showcasing a collective desire for peace.
Since Kirk’s assassination, conservatively-aligned gatherings have taken place across the nation, honoring him while rejecting violence. There’s been a notable emphasis on civil discourse in political engagements since the unrest following Floyd’s death.
In the wake of this tragedy, discussions around peace and community have become more crucial than ever, contrasting sharply with the turmoil observed during past political protests.
