Kelly Lipa and Mel Owens Discuss Controversial Comments
During his appearance on the show, Kelly Lipa took the chance to ask Mel Owens a pressing question. She mentioned, “I live with Kelly and Mark,” on Wednesday.
Owens, the star of this season’s Golden Bachelor, stirred up some controversy online after stating he would “cut” women over 60 from the ABC dating series while on his podcast. In an interview with Glamour, he addressed the backlash over his “unfair” and “insensitive” remarks, explaining that he has since “apologized” to the female contestants.
Lipa seized the moment to dive deeper, noting that discussing such a controversial topic is tricky. “It’s not that I wouldn’t date someone over 60,” she said, addressing Owens directly.
Owens responded, “Well, I didn’t say I didn’t want to…”
Lipa interjected, “You said you refused.”
In a light-hearted moment, Owens laughed, acknowledging the gaffe by saying, “Sorry,” while they shared the laughter with the studio audience.
“Touch,” he joked.
Owens explained his remarks by reflecting on his long marriage—25 years without dating. “So when I stopped going on dates…” he started, only to be interrupted by Lipa.
“That’s why you want to go to that age,” she chimed in.
Owens shared that while he was initially used to that demographic, he did apologize and felt they had smoothed things over.
Ripa took care to clarify, “I’m teasing you,” during the banter.
Mark Consuelos pointed out an interesting fact: “All the women on the show are over 60 years old, except for one.” Owens confessed he was unaware of this detail.
“I didn’t know that because I didn’t ask and no one told me,” he admitted.
Consuelos reacted with, “Smart,” and Owens responded with a reference to Michigan.
When asked about the dating pool this season on Golden Bachelor, Owens described the experience as “great.” He elaborated, saying, “There are a lot of common interests and life experiences.” He praised the women as “wonderful, refined, fun, and entertaining. It was amazing.”
Lipa concluded with, “They’ll find the best woman, right?” Owens agreed, noting, “They did a great job.”
