Mets designate outfielder Jose Siri for assignment following a brief and challenging time with the team

Chicago – Jose Ciri’s time with the Mets has been brief and, well, let’s just say it hasn’t gone as planned.

The 30-year-old outfielder joined the team last winter with hopes of sharing duties in center field. However, on Wednesday, he was placed on an assignment as the Mets made room for Tyron Taylor’s return from the injured list.

Taylor made his return to the starting lineup, playing against the Cubs at Wrigley Field.

Ciri managed a .292 OPS over 16 games with the Mets. Unfortunately, he spent a good part of the season recovering from a fractured left tibia, which he sustained back in April after fouling a ball off his leg.

Despite being recognized for his defensive skills, he faced some criticism last week at Citifield, where fans booed him after two misplays in center field. Offensively, his performance wasn’t shining either; he hit just .067 with 17 strikeouts.

Manager Carlos Mendoza remarked on the situation, mentioning that they needed someone to energize the right-handed hitters with solid defense, versatility, and speed, which is why Taylor’s presence was important.

Mendoza also mentioned that other options for center field include Cedric Mullins and Brandon Nimmo, who actually started his first game of the season in the position just a couple of days ago.

On a different note, Kodai Senga will remain in Port St. Lucie, Florida, after a live batting practice earlier this week. Mendoza had a decent review of Senga’s outing, saying the right-hander did “alright.”

It’s worth noting that Senga’s speed hit 93 mph, which is a bit lower than usual for him. Mendoza explained the weather might have played a role, suggesting it affected Senga’s performance and contributed to his fatigue.

After being reassigned to tackle his mechanics in Triple-A Syracuse, Senga had mixed results in two starts.

As for whether Senga will pitch again soon, Mendoza said, “He’ll keep throwing and then see where we are.”

Brandon Sprout is set to start the series opener on Friday in Miami, although Mendoza didn’t confirm who would take the mound on Saturday. However, it seems that Clay Holmes and Sean Manaea are strong possibilities.
