Mariners Celebrate AL West Title
Last night was a significant one for the Seattle Mariners. Star catcher Cal Raleigh made headlines by hitting his 59th and 60th home runs of the season during a game against the Colorado Rockies. The Mariners triumphed 9-2, clinching their first American League West title in 24 years at T-Mobile Park.
With this achievement, Raleigh became the seventh player in MLB history to reach 60 home runs in a single season.
To kick things off, Raleigh hit his first home run in the first inning, making contact with a 93-mph fastball from Rockies pitcher Tanner Gordon, sending the ball 438 feet into the third deck. “It felt like a movie,” teammate Julio Rodriguez said, expressing gratitude for Raleigh’s contributions. “He’s incredibly special.”
His second homer came in the eighth inning, bringing the score to 9-1 while the crowd chanted “MVP.” Raleigh turned a 98 mph pitch into a 389-foot hit to right field.
Reflecting on his success, Raleigh described hitting 60 home runs as “crazy.” He admitted, “I didn’t know if I’d ever hit 60 in my life. What a night.”
Other notable players who have achieved 60 home runs in a season include Babe Ruth (1927), Roger Maris (1961), Mark McGwire (1998 and 1999), Sammy Sosa (1998, 1999, 2001), Barry Bonds (2001), and Aaron Judge (2022).
This year also marks Raleigh’s 11th Multi-Homer Game, tying him with MLB legends for the record.
With four games left in the regular season, there’s a possibility Raleigh could surpass Judge’s American League record of 62 home runs, set in 2022.
Raleigh’s outstanding performance might have him in the running for the MVP Award, and Mariners’ manager Dan Wilson believes Raleigh deserves it wholeheartedly. “There’s no question about it,” he stated.
Following their victory, the Mariners, now 89-69, look to finish strong as they face the Rockies again in the final game of the three-game series.
