Falsehoods Cloaked in Justice

Recently, a number of Hollywood stars signed a letter advocating for a boycott of Israel’s film industry in response to the country’s actions against Hamas in Gaza. Now, another significant group from Hollywood has come forward with their own letters opposing last month’s boycott initiative.

Notable figures like Adam McKay, Olivia Colman, Mark Ruffalo, Cynthia Nixon, Tilda Swinton, and Javier Bardem were part of the initial boycott campaign.

This month, over 1,200 members from within the film industry have voiced their rejection of the earlier boycott proposal, asserting that boycotts are driven by “lies.” Reports indicate that they wish to make their stance clear.

“We understand the influence of film and the importance of stories. Hence, we cannot remain silent when narratives turn into weapons, when falsehoods are cloaked in righteousness, and when artists are swayed by anti-Semitic propaganda,” they stated.

Signatories of the counter letter include well-known names such as Leaf Schreiber, Mayim Bialik, Jean Simmons, Debra Messing, Sharon Osbourne, Greg Berlanti, and others.

“The pledge circulating under the ‘Palestinian film workers’ banner is not a matter of conscience. It’s a misguided document that supports unwanted censorship and erasure of art,” the new letter argues. “Silencing voices that aim to find common ground and showcase humanity is not just wrong but also ineffective and a form of collective punishment.”

The letter highlights that the Israeli film industry is “a lively center for collaboration between Jewish and Palestinian artists,” noting that many Israeli filmmakers often critique their own government.

It continues to assert that boycotting is based on misleading terms.

“The September pledges use vague language like ‘complicity’ without clarity. Who will decide if Israeli filmmakers are ‘complicit’? A McCarthyist commission with a blacklist? The latest letter paints all Israelis and Zionists (who represent around 95% of the Jewish community) as scapegoats, which history cautions against. Censorship has historically silenced filmmakers — from Nazi propaganda to Soviet censorship, even Hollywood’s own blacklisting. It has been misrepresented as virtuous every single time, but it was oppression at its core. Each iteration has broadened its target.”

Moreover, the letter alerts prior signatories that their names have been “weaponized.”

“We recognize that many have good intentions and believe they are advocating for peace. Still, your name has been weaponized and linked to false narratives and discrimination. This pledge ignores the opposing voices in Israel, while shielding Hamas from accountability,” they expressed.

In conclusion, the letter urges celebrity groups from before to retract their boycott pledges.

“If peace is the goal, call for the immediate release of the remaining hostages. We endorse filmmakers promoting dialogue across communities, and we will oppose Hamas. We urge all of our colleagues in the entertainment industry to turn down this biased, anti-Semitic boycott call that only complicates the road to peace.”
