Matt Fitzpatrick Reflects on Ryder Cup Challenges
Matt Fitzpatrick feels a mix of confidence and anxiety as he prepares for the Ryder Cup. “Of course it is,” he said, acknowledging the pressure of not being certain of his selection.
His previous three Ryder Cups were quite the experience—ending with a 1-7-0 record in 2023. European captain Luke Donald had encouraged him to compete in the British and European Masters Tournaments and to play in the final group before finally granting him a spot this year. Despite a slow start in 2025 and the weight of those demands from Donald, Fitzpatrick received a captain’s pick at Beth Page Black this weekend, offering him a chance to bolster his international reputation.
“I didn’t think I was guaranteed the place, but based on my performance leading up to the selection, I felt I had some strong arguments,” Fitzpatrick noted on Thursday. He added, “Luke has the right to choose as he sees fit. It’s always easier if you qualify directly.”
Fitzpatrick has already experienced some heckling as fans reacted to missed shots during practice on Wednesday. Interestingly, his parents—who had attended his first three Ryder Cups—didn’t make the trip to Long Island this year. They will be at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship next week, a choice made partly due to disappointing spectator experiences in 2021.
This marks a second shot for Fitzpatrick at the Ryder Cup, having struggled initially in 2016. He admitted he wasn’t quite ready back then. “I have to let that go a bit,” he commented. Yet, after being left off the 2018 roster and feeling overlooked in 2021 and 2023, the 2022 US Open champion believes he’s now prepared for the challenge.
As for recent performances, Fitzpatrick’s struggles affected his touring results at the start of 2025 but he has recently shown improvement. He placed fifth in the European Masters and sixth in the British Masters while trying to manage his schedule without exhausting himself. He mentioned that finishing in the top 10 felt like a bonus, yet it was crucial for restoring some momentum after a rough patch.
Ultimately, Fitzpatrick knows he must deliver to reshape his Ryder Cup narrative. “It’s frustrating,” he admitted, reflecting on his past records. The upcoming matches this weekend will be significant as he strives to define his legacy.
