Chicago – Mets Consider Power Arms for Bullpen Boost

The Mets are looking into adding some power pitchers to strengthen their bullpen this weekend.

Dylan Ross, who recently excelled at Triple-A Syracuse, might make his way to Miami on Saturday, based on what sources say.

Since Syracuse wrapped up its season, Ross has been training in Florida.

At just 25, Ross has pitched for three levels of the Mets organization this season, boasting a 2.17 ERA over more than 49 games.

In his 28 outings for Syracuse, he put up an impressive 1.69 ERA and struck out 39 batters in 32 innings.

Team officials believe that Ross could be an upgraded version of Ryne Stanek.

If brought up, he would likely slot into the seventh inning and could be a leverage option in important game situations.

Moreover, if the Mets secure a postseason spot, Ross might be in contention for the NL wild card roster.

The Mets drafted Ross in the 13th round of 2022 from the University of Georgia.

An opening in the bullpen arose after Reed Garrett’s elbow inflammation raised concerns about potential Tommy John surgery.

In a recent victory over the Cubs, Francisco Alvarez, who had played back-to-back games, was benched as manager Carlos Mendoza opted to rest him. This decision followed Alvarez experiencing some twitching during play.

Mendoza had intended to give Alvarez a break, especially as the catcher was showing signs of fatigue behind the plate.

Alvarez is dealing with a ligament sprain in his right thumb, which will require surgery post-season, and he also broke his left pinky during a recent rehab stint. Despite these issues, he’s managed to maintain an OPS of .861 this September, with four home runs to his name.

Luis Torrens is set to start as catcher, but Alvarez will be available off the bench.

Kodai Senga threw a bullpen session in Port St. Lucie two days after what was deemed a “just okay” live batting practice.

Mendoza mentioned the team would evaluate developments over the weekend to determine Senga’s next steps as he seeks to improve his mechanics after struggling recently during his minor league assignment on September 5th.
