How to Play PIP

The PIP game features a grid filled with various colored boxes. Each color represents a specific “state” that needs to be fulfilled. Players select how many dominoes they want to use to fill the grid. Winning requires using all the dominoes appropriately while meeting all conditions. There are layers of easy and medium difficulties available.

Here’s a peek at a challenging tearpip:

Pip Example

On the grid, you’ll notice all kinds of symbols and numbers. For instance, three purple squares on the left must not match (hence no equal signs allowed). Right beside them, two pink squares must sum to zero. All the zigzag blue squares need to be the same. It’s crucial to click the dominoes to rotate them when setting them in the right position.

Some additional conditions not shown might include “less than” or “greater than.” Here are a few examples:

  • All pips in this group must be equal.
  • No pips in this group should match.
  • The PIP for this tile must exceed the specified number.
  • The number in question must be exactly equal to the specified value.
  • Tiles without specific requirements can be used freely.

To succeed, you’ll need to fill every square and use all the dominoes according to the stated conditions. Play today’s PIPS puzzle here.

Today’s PIPS Solution

Here is a basic solution for a medium-difficulty pip. Following this, we’ll walk you through a more challenging puzzle. Spoiler alert!

Difficult

Now, let’s dive into today’s tricky PIPS. It appears somewhat like a square blob, making it hard to identify a clear starting point. A key clue is the purple 22 group, which involves two dominoes with 6 pips and two with 5 pips. Additionally, the pink equal group at the top right needs a blank domino, as that’s the only option. Thus, the pink equal group at the bottom left should total four.

Step 1: I commenced by addressing the purple 22 group. I placed a 5/5 domino at the bottom, a 6/0 domino to the pink group, and a 6/2 domino leading up to a free tile.

Next, I added a 2/4 domino in the blue 2 to connect to the pink group, and then linked it to a 4/1 domino in the green area.

Step 2: I positioned a 4/3 domino in the dark blue area that doesn’t match. I then attached a 2/5 from an orange 2 and added the remaining tiles to complete the pink group at the bottom left. After that, I placed a 0/0 domino in the pink equal group at the top right and followed this with a 1/0 domino in the purple sector.

Solved: Finally, I connected a 3/5 domino from the free tile to the dark blue and placed 2/0 dominoes from the next available tile into the blue section.

I did stumble a bit at the beginning, attempting to use the blank tiles in the bottom left pink group. However, I soon realized that wouldn’t work for the other pink groups. I quickly adjusted my approach and finished the puzzle in no time. What was I thinking?
