Huckabee criticizes European allies for acknowledging Palestinian statehood

The US ambassador, Mike Huckabee, has expressed concerns regarding countries that recognized Palestine, claiming they are undermining efforts to reach a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip, as well as hindering a hostage release agreement.

For its part, the US has frequently accused Hamas of being an obstacle to securing ceasefires and release deals. However, in mid-September, an Israeli strike on Hamas officials in Qatar was effectively halted under the previous Trump administration.

In an interview, Huckabee referenced Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who has been vocal about the need for negotiations with Hamas. Huckabee suggested this initiative was pivotal for Israel’s stance. He discussed the complexities surrounding the perception of the Palestinian state and how it hampers US efforts to navigate the financial crisis between Israel and the Palestinian Authority (PA). Israel is reportedly willing to announce tax revenues it collects on behalf of the PA, contingent upon certain reforms from Ramallah.

“We’ve been trying to address the deadlock between the Palestinian Authority and the financial situation with Israel,” Huckabee noted, though he did not delve deeply into the specifics.

He acknowledged the challenges posed by the Palestinian Authority, hinting that the situation isn’t beneficial for anyone involved. Nevertheless, he mentioned that progress is being made with unresolved issues, indicating ongoing discussions between Ramallah and Jerusalem.

Bezarel Smotrich, Israel’s Finance Minister, plays a key role in managing tax revenues for Palestine. This far-right politician, who opposes the establishment of a Palestinian state, has been transparent about his commitment to solidifying Israel’s control in the West Bank while expanding its territorial settlements.

Huckabee further articulated that international recognition of the Palestinian state is disincentivizing Israel, particularly in terms of annexing parts of the West Bank. Remarks made by President Trump from the Oval Office highlighted his conversations with Arab and Gulf leaders, where he asserted that such recognition would deter Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu from pursuing annexation plans.
