Jimmy Kimmel’s Show Returns After Controversy
Recently, Sinclair Broadcast Group and Nexstar Media Group announced that “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” will be back in their schedules on Friday evening. This follows a decision by some ABC affiliates to drop the show due to Kimmel’s comments regarding Charlie Kirk’s assassination.
Both Sinclair and Nexstar, who own nearly a quarter of all ABC affiliate stations, had pulled Kimmel’s late-night program after a monologue where he remarked on the “MAGA gang” attempting to redefine the identity of the individual responsible for Kirk’s murder.
On Friday, Sinclair stated that they would reinstate Kimmel’s show after receiving “thoughtful feedback from viewers, advertisers, and community leaders representing a wide range of perspectives.”
In its announcement, Sinclair emphasized ongoing discussions with ABC, proposing measures for stronger accountability and viewer engagement, including the creation of an independent ombudsman across the network. They highlighted the goal of ensuring programming remains relevant and accurate for viewers.
Sinclair added, “We hold ourselves accountable as local broadcasters to deliver content that meets community interests while also fulfilling our commitments to national network programming.”
“Although the ABC network and Disney haven’t adopted these suggestions yet, we respect their decision but believe these changes can cultivate trust and responsibility,” they also noted.
It’s worth mentioning that, despite some pressure from Federal Communications Chairman Brendan Carr towards ABC to discipline Kimmel for his remarks, Sinclair maintained that their choice to temporarily suspend the show was not influenced by the government.
“Free speech allows broadcasters the right to make judgments about the content aired on their local stations,” Sinclair noted. “While we recognize that not everyone may agree with our programming decisions, advocating for free speech while demanding specific content on air is contradictory.”
Nexstar conveyed a similar message in their statement about Kimmel’s return to their ABC affiliate networks.
Nexstar acknowledged discussions with The Walt Disney Company, appreciating their constructive approach. The network reiterated its commitment to the First Amendment while ensuring local and national news remains based on factual and unbiased content.
“We distinguish ourselves from cable networks and other large streaming platforms through our commitment to being custodians of public airwaves and reflecting community values,” they explained.
When Kimmel returned on Tuesday, he addressed the backlash head-on, stating, “I never intended to make light of the murder of a young man. There’s nothing funny about it.”
Kimmel added, “I get that my comments may have seemed ill-timed or unclear to some, and if anyone felt I was pointing fingers, I understand why you’re upset. If the roles were reversed, I probably would feel the same.”
In reaction to Kimmel’s comeback, former President Donald Trump took to Truth Social, expressing disbelief that ABC reinstated Kimmel.
Trump stated, “The White House had been informed that his show was canceled! Something changed since then because his audience is gone, and frankly, he was never that funny. Why bring back someone who jeopardizes the network with his 99% positive Democrat content?”
He further commented, “He’s merely an extension of the DNC, which could lead to potential illegal campaign contributions. I believe we might look into this. The last time I pursued them, I ended up with $16 million; this may turn out to be even more lucrative. A true group of losers! Let Kimmel stew in his poor ratings.”
