The Jets know they need to start and finish games better. That’s pretty much the essence of their current struggles, reflected in their 0-3 record as they prepare for a matchup against the winless Dolphins. Cornerback Sauce Gardner feels they’re “very close,” and thinks the games against the Steelers and Buccaneers could have swung their way.
“It’s tough to look at our record, but we’re really just a field goal and a stop away from being 2-1,” Gardner noted after practice. “Mentally, we’re in a good place. We know we have what it takes.”
Defensively, the unit under first-year coordinator Steve Wilkes has shown flashes but failed to secure wins in critical moments. In one game, they allowed the opponent to score a game-winning field goal after leading by a touchdown, following a blocked kick that was returned for a score.
Looking ahead to the game on Monday night, Wilkes stated the need to close out games is crucial. “We’ve shown signs of improvement, but finishing is what really counts. Holding opponents to five field goals while allowing a touchdown doesn’t cut it. We need to step up,” he remarked.
With starting linebacker Quincy Williams out for at least four weeks due to a shoulder injury, the defense currently ranks low in yardage allowed per game. Wilkes is aware that it’s on him to position his players for success. “It starts with me,” he said. “This week is all about making those plays when opportunities arise.”
Offensively, the Jets might welcome back quarterback Justin Fields, who missed the previous game due to a concussion. Receiver Garrett Wilson expressed optimism, stating they feel close to turning it around despite their 0-3 status. “We’ve had some plays that could have made a difference. We need to find a way to get it done,” he said.
Wilson emphasized the importance of scoring a touchdown in their early drives instead of settling for field goals, which leads to a tough catch-up scenario later on. “We can’t let ourselves get trapped in that situation. Early touchdowns change everything,” he added.
The Dolphins also find themselves struggling at 0-3, but their offense features a speedy trio in Tua Tagovailoa, Tyreek Hill, and Jaylen Waddle, backed up by De’von Achane. Gardner acknowledged their agility, joking, “It feels like they have an Olympic track team over there, which is why we have to be quick.”
Despite recent setbacks, Gardner and Wilson appreciated the celebration from rookie Ahlong Wren after a recent score, even if it drew some criticism. Wilson found it amusing, stating, “It’s great to see that enthusiasm. We just want to focus on getting that win and not let the pressure get to us. Seeing our coaches having fun is a bonus.”
