Justin Fields Returns to Practice
On Friday, Justin Fields participated fully in practice for the second consecutive day, which boosts his chances of joining the Jets’ lineup against the Dolphins on Monday night.
The 26-year-old quarterback had to sit out a previous game due to a concussion sustained during the Jets’ matchup against the Bills in week two, contributing to a loss against the Buccaneers.
Offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand expressed enthusiasm before practice, saying, “It’s great to get Justin back. There’s a reason we brought him in as our quarterback. It was really good to see him come out of that first game well. Hopefully, he can get back out there soon.”
While Fields was sidelined, veteran backup Tyrod Taylor stepped in, completing 26 of 36 passes for 197 yards with two touchdowns. However, he also had two interceptions, which the Buccaneers capitalized on in the second quarter.
During the game, Taylor also rushed for 48 yards on eight attempts. Fields, who signed a two-year, $40 million contract in March, previously scored two rushing touchdowns and threw another touchdown to Aaron Rodgers in the Jets’ season opener against the Steelers.
Special teams coordinator Chris Banjo noted that he outperformed Ahlong Len in a recent blocked field goal return for a touchdown. He humorously mentioned the adrenaline that comes with such high-pressure moments. “I wasn’t really dancing, but if I had a heart rate monitor, it would’ve likely alerted me to the high levels of excitement,” he commented. “It was definitely a cool moment, and I’m really proud of the team.”
On another note, defensive players Jarvis Brownlee Jr. and Jermaine Johnson did not practice due to ankle injuries, making their availability against the Dolphins appear doubtful. Brownlee was acquired earlier this week in a trade with the Titans.
Additionally, Kenne Nwangu was limited due to hamstring concerns, but Tony Adams, Josh Reynolds, and Jay Tufele all upgraded to full participation as of Thursday.
