FBI Fires Agents After George Floyd Protests

Reports indicate that the FBI has dismissed nearly 20 agents who were photographed kneeling during the protests that erupted following George Floyd’s death in 2020. The Associated Press mentioned that the number of agents terminated might be around 20, with many of them already having been reassigned to less significant roles since then.

Reuters described the number of agents involved as “more than a dozen.” The controversial photo reportedly depicted a group of agents kneeling at a demonstration in Washington D.C. after Floyd was murdered in Minneapolis in May 2020.

Kneeling became a common gesture among protesters, symbolizing solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement and advocating for racial justice. Floyd, a Black man, died when a police officer knelt on his neck for several minutes, a scene that sparked nationwide outrage.

When asked about the reported dismissals, the FBI declined to comment. The FBI Agents Association has claimed that these terminations are unlawful, suggesting that they infringe on civil servant protections. They expressed concern that such actions set a troubling precedent, suggesting that employees were punished for their decisions in tense situations.

Critics argue that these firings reflect a broader purge led by FBI Director Kash Patel, impacting the department both internally and externally. Supporters of Patel have characterized the kneeling incident as indicative of political bias.

Some of the agents involved have stated that they were merely following orders to diffuse tensions, facing a hostile crowd. One former agent noted, “It was survival, not politics.”

This incident occurs amid a larger trend of personnel changes in the FBI as Patel aims to reshape the agency. Last month alone, at least five agents and high-ranking officials were reportedly dismissed in what has been termed a sweeping overhaul.
