New Jersey Governor Candidate Mikie Sherrill Faces Criticism Over Transgender Athlete Stance

New Jersey’s gubernatorial candidate, Mikie Sherrill, is under scrutiny for her voting records regarding transgender athletes in women’s sports. Recently, former President Donald Trump criticized her position on social media, claiming she supports policies that he believes harm the integrity of American sports.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated, “Sherrill wants open borders, men playing in women’s sports, and everything that almost destroyed America.” This statement reflects widespread concerns among certain voter demographics regarding Sherrill’s stance.

Efforts to confirm Sherrill’s viewpoint on transgender athletes have gone unanswered despite multiple inquiries from various media outlets. Critics have pointed to her votes, particularly against a bill intended to protect women and girls in sports, which was proposed back in 2023.

While Sherrill has co-sponsored the Equality Act and the Transgender Bill of Rights, both of which advocate for the rights of transgender individuals, her stance seems to contradict the feelings of some constituents, especially in light of her past proposals like the NCAA Sports Act aimed at safeguarding women’s sports.

The discourse around this issue has heightened with voices like Paula Scanlan, a former swimmer from the University of Pennsylvania, who has been vocal about her experiences in the ongoing controversy surrounding Leah Thomas, a trans athlete. Scanlan recently expressed her discontent with Sherrill’s actions in relation to this topic.

The New Jersey Republican Party has capitalized on Sherrill’s voting history, making it a focal point in campaign materials. Opponent Jack Ciattarelli has also highlighted her record, seeking to sway public opinion against her.

A notable case in the discussion of transgender athletes is Sadie Schreiner, a trans athlete from New Jersey, who has gained attention in the sports community. Schreiner, who identifies as a dominant female competitor, has shared her experiences and legal battles, including a lawsuit against Princeton University for alleged discrimination during a race.

Recent polling indicates a significant portion of the American public, including many Democrats, are against allowing trans athletes to compete in women’s sports. For example, a survey found that around 79% of participants believed biological men shouldn’t compete in women’s sports, and strikingly, 67% of Democrats shared this sentiment.

This issue appears to be influencing the political landscape ahead of the 2024 election, with many voters identifying it as crucial to their decisions at the polls.

In the Democratic camp, prominent figures like Pete Buttigieg and Kamala Harris have reaffirmed their support for considering biological factors in sports, suggesting that they agree with the concerns parents and athletes have regarding fairness in competition.
