Impressive Performance from Cam Schlitler as Yankees Eye Playoffs
The next time Cam Schlitler steps onto the mound, it will be for the playoffs. Although he hasn’t pitched in October before, his recent performance certainly suggested he’s ready for the high-stakes atmosphere.
Manager Aron Boone confidently stated, “Yes, absolutely.” So, what’s behind Boone’s enthusiasm?
In just his 14th Major League start, the rookie right-hander delivered a strong showing against the Orioles, leading the Yankees to a 6-1 victory at home. Schlitler pitched seven innings, setting a personal record with nine strikeouts.
This outing came just six days after he faced the Orioles at Camden Yard. While there were moments of challenge—like when he hit two batters in the fifth inning—he still managed to close out the inning by striking out Jackson Holiday.
As Schlitler looks ahead, he’s aware of the significance of his role. The Yankees are striving to keep their postseason hopes alive in the AL East, and he’s stepped up to the plate. “Obviously, I felt the pressure after [Friday], but that’s something I thrive on,” he remarked. “I want to embrace it.”
He regards games like these as crucial preparation for what’s to come. “We’re in high-stakes territory right now,” he admitted. “I know I lack playoff experience, but that’s behind us now. We need to focus on what’s ahead.”
Schlitler believes the pressure will help him lock in even more. “I relish every aspect of it, whether it goes well or not. I’m determined to handle it the right way moving into next week,” he noted.
Looking forward, it’s likely that either Schlitler or Lewis Gill, who starts on Sunday, will take the mound for the Yankees during the ALDS, depending on how things shape up with Max Fried and Carlos Rodon.
While Schlitler won’t face an easy path in the playoffs, the Yankees have faith in his abilities. Aaron Judge expressed his appreciation for Schlitler’s growth throughout the season. “He’s shown impressive development. Not only does he have the skills, but he understands how to read hitters,” Judge said.
Boone remarked on Schlitler’s potential to pitch in high-pressure situations, noting, “With his capabilities, it’s natural for him to take on big roles.” He expressed confidence in Schlitler’s humility and competitive spirit, saying, “That combination is powerful.”
In Boone’s view, Schlitler’s arrival has been a game-changer for the rotation. “He’s injected new energy into our lineup, and he’s a key reason we’re in this position,” Boone concluded.
