Rebecca Gayhart, wife of actor Eric Dane, recently provided insights into how their family is coping with his diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Dane, known for his role in “Grey’s Anatomy,” announced his condition in April. In a conversation with a magazine, Gayhart, who is 54, shared that she and their two daughters, Billie (15) and Georgia (13), are taking things one day at a time.
Gayhart stated, “We have professional therapists who assist us. We are just holding on to hope, dignity, and love.” She described the situation as “heartbreaking” and said that her daughters are particularly having a tough time with it.
Dane expressed gratitude for his family’s support while requesting privacy during this challenging period. The couple, who began dating in 2003 and were married in 2004, faced a divorce filing in 2018 due to “incompatible differences,” but Gayhart requested to withdraw that petition earlier this year.
In a recent interview, Gayhart admitted that keeping a positive outlook is tough for both her and Dane. “I don’t think I’m in a place to pull out positive nuggets just yet,” she confided, emphasizing the toll that the situation has taken on their family dynamics. “Eric will always be my family, whether we’re married or not,” she added, expressing hope for a future cure for ALS.
Dane has shared his emotional struggles during this journey and how Gayhart has been a vital source of support. He described her affectionately as his “biggest champion” and mentioned their improved friendship and co-parenting relationship.
The actor discussed the reality of living with ALS, indicating that he faces significant challenges daily—like limited mobility. “I have one functional arm,” he shared during an interview, illustrating the impact of neurodegenerative conditions. Nevertheless, he remains determined and hopeful, stating, “I don’t think this is the end of my story,” showcasing his resilience amid adversity.
Dr. Merit Cudkowicz, who is part of his care team, highlighted that possible sources for the risk factors associated with ALS might include environmental elements and sports-related injuries. Despite the physical challenges ahead, Dane has made it clear that he intends to continue his career, asserting, “I’m going to ride this until the wheels fall off.”
