Celebration of a Classic: The 4K Remaster of Rocky Horror Picture Show
This year, the Academy Museum celebrated a significant milestone with a sold-out anniversary screening of the Rocky Horror Picture Show, now presented in 4K. The event was not just about the film but also featured lively discussions, particularly with Tim Curry, who received a warm standing ovation. He was joined by co-stars Barry Bostwick (Brad), Patricia Quinn (Magenta), Nell Campbell (Columbia), and producer Lou Adler for photos.
Curry expressed his excitement and gratitude towards the Academy, noting how this presentation breathes new life into a film that’s been cherished for 50 years.
Reflecting on his portrayal of Frank N. Furter, Curry spoke about the distinctive accent he adopted. He mentioned that the idea was to sound regal, which, he felt, fit Frank’s character well. There were also nods to Pierre La Roche, the makeup artist who contributed significantly to the film.
Looking back at five decades of midnight screenings, Curry emphasized the film’s vital message, particularly for LGBTQ audiences. “I believe films carry messages that are incredibly important,” he noted.
However, Curry admitted that the film’s unique nature made casting in Hollywood quite challenging. He shared a moment of self-doubt about being typecast after the role. Yet, he recalled a conversation with Stephen Flairs that opened his eyes to the idea that playing diverse roles is indeed possible.
To conclude the night, Curry gave an honest health update, reminiscing about the strokes he suffered in 2012. “I can’t walk yet, so I’m in this chair. It really limits me, and singing is out of the question,” he shared candidly.
