Marquez Clinches 2025 MotoGP Riders Championship

Mark Marquez, with a second-place finish at the Japanese Grand Prix, has secured his seventh MotoGP Riders Championship, marking his ninth world title across all classes. This achievement signals one of the most remarkable comebacks in motorsport history.

After clinching his sixth title in 2019, Marquez faced a devastating injury that left him questioning his future in racing. He described that time as a “nightmare,” filled with uncertainty about whether he could return to winning form.

His troubles began in the 2020 season opener when a severe crash at Circuit DeGeres resulted in a broken right humerus, necessitating surgery shortly after the race. Although he attempted a comeback at the Andalusian Grand Prix a week later, he ultimately withdrew, needing a second surgery after injuring his arm again at home.

This second surgery sidelined him for the remainder of the 2020 season, with a third procedure required later on due to complications that delayed his healing process. It was clear that his injury challenges were only beginning.

Marquez returned to racing in 2021 but missed the first two races for rehabilitation. He managed three wins but ultimately sat out the last two races of the season to prepare for 2022. That year, he faced setbacks, crashing 22 times over 14 races, including suffering a concussion from a motocross incident.

During the 2022 season, he finished fifth in the opener but then experienced multiple crashes, getting sidelined by double vision, which kept him out of the third race. His situation worsened, requiring a fourth surgery to correct an issue with his right arm, which had rotated significantly. The surgery at the Mayo Clinic brought some improvement, but the path to recovery remained steep.

After a summer break, he returned at the Aragon Grand Prix, achieving four points in the last six races and finishing 13th in rankings, the highest among Honda riders, despite missing a substantial number of races.

His relationship with Honda soured, leading to contract termination after a long tenure, which saw him joining the Grecini Racing MotoGP team. There, he experienced his best season since 2019, with three wins and numerous podium finishes, landing him a third place in the championship.

This led to a position with the senior Ducati Lenovo team, where Marquez has had a stellar season in 2025. He quickly gained momentum, winning several early races and making substantial strides in the championship standings.

With a strong performance at the Japanese Grand Prix, he finished second in both the sprint and the Grand Prix, clinching the ultimate title. It’s a testament to his relentless spirit and determination to overcome adversity.

Upon winning, Marquez expressed feeling at peace with his journey, acknowledging the support he received throughout his challenges. He reflected on the difficulty of moving forward while also reminiscing about the struggles he faced.

His fellow competitors celebrated Marquez’s incredible comeback, remarking on the rollercoaster of emotions he had endured. Many praised him, agreeing that his return to the top ranks epitomizes one of the greatest comebacks in sports history.

In the end, Marquez’s resilience has secured him a position in MotoGP history, a journey marked by hardships and triumphs that he—and his supporters—will never forget.
