Kurt Warner Weighs in on NFL Kickoff Changes
Kurt Warner, a Super Bowl-winning quarterback, has shared his thoughts on the recent adjustments to the NFL’s kickoff rules. While he appreciates some aspects of the changes, he believes they could use considerable improvement.
Warner raised a point about the competitive balance, saying that the changes might lead to more challenges for teams. “I really like seeing kickoffs making a comeback,” he mentioned, but he questioned whether the NFL’s competition committee fully considered the skills of today’s kickers. He noted how critical it is for drives to reach about 15 yards for field goal attempts. “I think the changes might actually complicate things more,” he added.
The NFL introduced the dynamic kickoff rule for the 2024 season. This new setup stipulates a designated landing area between the end zone and the 20-yard line, with players positioned between the 30 and 40-yard lines awaiting the kickoff.
In the opening week of the 2024 season, kickoffs were returned at an impressive rate of 75.6%, the highest figure recorded since 2010.
Before the 2025 season hit, further modifications to the kickoff rules were also approved. For example, a number of touchbacks placed the ball on the 35-yard line, and a trailing team could choose to execute an onside kick.
Additionally, if the kickoff goes outside the designated area, the receiving team would start their possession on the 40-yard line.
Special teams coordinators are now strategizing how best to execute kicks within this landing zone, aiming to make it harder for the receiving team to field the ball cleanly and maximize their return yards.
Some teams are opting for kicks that trigger automatic touchbacks rather than relying on the twists of the new rule.
During a recent game between the Arizona Cardinals and the Seattle Seahawks, the kickoff strategy became a topic of debate. A kickoff misfire allowed the Seahawks to start their game-winning drive from the 40-yard line, which ultimately led them to victory and improved their record to 3-1.
