Trump: 'I imagine' the DOJ is looking into Wray

On Sunday, former President Trump expressed his belief that the Department of Justice may be looking into former FBI director Christopher Wray. “I imagine. I certainly imagine. I think they do,” Trump noted during a phone interview. He suggested that Wray’s actions were inappropriate and criticized much of his service as well.

This speculation unfolded just days after federal prosecutors, appointed by Trump, filed a lawsuit against James Comey, the former FBI director, alleging he approved an anonymous leak related to an ongoing investigation. Comey, who was appointed by Obama and later fired by Trump, is also facing accusations of making false statements to Congress.

Comey insists on his innocence and looks forward to addressing the charges in court, with an arrest scheduled for October 9 in Alexandria, Virginia. Throughout his presidency, Trump has had contentious relationships with both Comey and Wray, even indicating intentions to dismiss Wray before he stepped down at the end of the Biden administration. Although Trump chose Wray to fill the role left by Comey, he has since expressed regret over that decision.

In 2022, Trump celebrated Wray’s resignation, criticizing him in light of an investigation into how he handled classified materials after taking office. Recently, Trump targeted Wray again, demanding explanations regarding Wray’s presence during the January 6, 2021, Capitol riots, suggesting he might not have fully clarified his role.

FBI Director Kash Patel accused Wray of lying to Congress and criticized the agency’s handling of the January 6 situation. Trump echoed these sentiments, stating that FBI agents may have acted more as instigators than as law enforcement officials. “It’s two in a row, Comey and Ray, who caught lying in our great nation,” he commented. “We can’t let this happen to America again!”

Wray has not publicly responded to these claims. In a “Fox News Sunday” interview, Vice President Vance stated that while Comey will have an opportunity to defend himself in court, he anticipates further accusations may follow during the current administration.
