Recap of task Episode 4: “All Roads”

In the latest episode of task, titled “All Roads,” we see Robbie Prender Grast (Tom Pelphrey) and his close friend Cliff Broward (Raúl Castillo) heading off together, which might not raise too many eyebrows. What really stands out, though, is the episode’s intense exploration of the dark undercurrents within law enforcement.

**Spoilers for task Episode 4 “All Roads” on HBO Max**

The climax of Episode 4 revolves around a botched FBI operation orchestrated by agent Tom Brandis (Mark Ruffalo). The FBI aims to rescue Sam (Ben Doherty), who has been ensnared. They utilize Rayleiman’s (Peter Patrichios) phone to lure Cliff into meeting late at night at a park. Unfortunately, this plan goes awry because someone in the agency switched Ray’s phone with a fake, handing the real one to Dark Heart instead.

The mission spirals into confusion and chaos, ultimately leading Cliff into a trap set by Jason Wilkes (Sam Keely) and Perry Dorazo (Jamie McShane), where he is tortured and killed.

How Does Cliff Die?

The episode’s conclusion is hard to watch. Cliff endures brutal torture at the hands of Jason, who wraps cellophane around his already battered head. It’s heartbreaking, really.

The scene was challenging for the cast, as described by Sam Keely, who recalled the atmosphere in the cramped industrial garage where they filmed. “There was an energy in that room; we all felt it,” he noted, emphasizing how important it was to portray the heaviness of the moment.

Interestingly, director Sari Richardson Whitfield confirmed that they did not use special effects or stunt doubles for Cliff’s suffocation scenes. Raúl Castillo performed the stunts himself.

Jamie McShane shared how Castillo managed the difficult scene, saying, “He practically put himself in danger at times to get it right.” Castillo acknowledged that there were some techniques in place, but it was a raw experience that pushed boundaries.

Castillo described the environment as pushing them to their limits: “At some point, we just went for it, trusting each other.” This trust definitely added to the scene’s authenticity.

Who is the Mole?

Meanwhile, Erin (Margarita Levieva) is aware that someone within the task force is working with Robbie against Dark Heart. Questions loom about how this betrayal occurred and who is truly trustworthy; Tom Brandis is starting to look over his shoulder at everyone, even his colleagues like Anthony Grasso (Fabian Frankel) and Lizzie Stober (Alison Oliver). A tense phone call from Tom’s boss, Kathleen McGinty (Martha Plimpton), raises further suspicions. Is she linked to Dark Heart?

task will return to HBO and HBO Max on Sunday, October 5th.
