Ravens’ Struggles Against Chiefs Highlight Concerns
A clip from the 2011 NFL documentary Soccer Life: Bill Belichick has resurfaced, showing then-Patriots head coach Bill Belichick speaking to quarterback Tom Brady during a tough 38-17 loss to the New Orleans Saints. In a nutshell, Belichick voiced his frustration: “You can’t play the way you need to play for this team.” That sentiment could easily apply to the Ravens following their recent game.
This past Sunday, the Baltimore Ravens and Kansas City Chiefs met at Arrowhead Stadium, both entering the matchup with a 1-2 record. If you looked at the final score, 37-20 in favor of the Chiefs, you might not have guessed how dominant the Chiefs were. Despite starting strong with a 7-0 lead, the Ravens struggled significantly as the game progressed.
The score doesn’t reflect just how lopsided the game was. Baltimore seemed to have issues that went beyond the game clock. Injuries played a huge role, contributing to a worrying trend for the Ravens this season.
Injuries can indeed derail a team. Before their game in Missouri, they were already without defensive tackle Nnamdi Madubike, who was sidelined for at least four games due to neck issues. Unfortunately, Broderick Washington, who often started alongside Madubike, also found himself on injured reserve with an ankle injury.
As if that wasn’t enough, during the showdown against the Chiefs, quarterback Lamar Jackson left the game in the third quarter because of a hamstring injury. The Ravens also faced losses from other key players, which only added to their woes.
Coach John Harbaugh expressed some optimism post-game, indicating he didn’t believe the new injuries would sideline players for the season. However, given the Ravens’ prior struggles, this game could be detrimental for a team already feeling pressure.
In reality, the Ravens’ performance against the Chiefs didn’t come as a total surprise. Yes, injuries were a factor, but the team had shown vulnerabilities in their first three games. They opened the season with a narrow loss to the Buffalo Bills and followed that with an unexpected victory over the Cleveland Browns. Yet, they couldn’t sustain that momentum, suffering another setback against the Detroit Lions.
So, where does that leave the Ravens? Has the season already slipped away? Well, not quite. There’s still hope. Jackson and some other key players could return from injuries sooner than expected. Plus, the upcoming schedule seems more forgiving after a tough start.
But while the path to recovery exists, it won’t be easy. At 1-3, the Ravens need to address concerns on both sides of the ball and quickly. The immediate challenge is to secure a win against the Houston Texans next week, as failing to do so would feel significant.
For now, however, the issues remain clear. The Ravens are struggling, showing a lack of defensive resilience and mental toughness necessary to stop their mistakes from accumulating. In the end, it seems like a fitting reminder to echo Belichick: “It’s so frustrating.”
