Criticism of South Texas Candidate Over Rhetoric
Bobby Prido, a Democratic Congressional candidate from South Texas, has faced backlash for what some are calling “sickness” and “spreading hatred” through his statements regarding President Donald Trump and Republicans. This criticism has intensified following recent anti-ICE shootings in Dallas.
Former Texas Republican Representative Mayra Flores, the first Mexican-born woman elected to Congress, accused Prido and fellow Democrats of unfairly targeting law enforcement officers. “This kind of hateful speech leads to tragic outcomes,” she stated. “We’ve seen a rise in violence, and much of it traces back to the rhetoric used by some in Congress.”
“These leaders, they really need to set a better example,” she continued. “People look up to them, and if they promote hate, it can influence how the public feels about those who serve our country, especially our law enforcement officers.”
The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) called out Pulido for having a “long history of violent political rhetoric.” They condemned acts of political violence, such as the assassination of Charlie Kirk, and urged for a more civil discourse from both sides, suggesting that Prido’s past words do not align with this call for restraint.
On September 10th, Pulido expressed sorrow over Kirk’s situation on social media, encouraging a decrease in political hostilities. However, the NRCC pointed out that Pulido’s inflammatory remarks date back several years, including a controversial Halloween costume he wore in 2015.
Moreover, he has made claims suggesting that supporters of Trump are racist, and in the past, has remarked that Trump’s political ambitions align with the alt-right. Recently, he described Republicans as “Marxists and fascists.”
Although Prido has publicly supported movements like Black Lives Matter, he has also made statements indicating that no country is free from oppressive practices, which raised eyebrows.
Flores, addressing Prido’s actions, urged politicians to focus on the effectiveness of law enforcement and to stop using them for political gain. “At the end of the day, we’re all Americans trying to build a better community. Safety should come before partisan politics,” she argued.
With his status in the Tejano music scene, many believe Prido has a unique responsibility to set a positive example. Flores highlighted that his influence could be significant, stating, “Given his popularity, he ought to treat such serious issues with the respect they deserve.”
The NRCC emphasized the need for accountability, declaring that Prido’s track record disqualifies him from political office. They stated that extreme rhetoric has dangerous consequences, affecting real people.
Republican Representative Ronnie Jackson criticized the Democratic Party for failing to take responsibility for the rhetoric that, according to him, encourages violence. He referred to the recent shooting at an ICE facility as alarming and indicative of the risks posed by hostile political discourse.
“It’s time for Democrats to acknowledge their role in fostering a culture of violence,” Jackson asserted. Meanwhile, Prido had yet to respond to requests for comment.
