Giants Part Ways with Manager Bob Melvin
The San Francisco Giants have decided to part ways with manager Bob Melvin, just a day after the conclusion of the 2025 MLB regular season.
Although Melvin’s option for the 2026 season was picked up back in July, the team has opted to pursue a different direction. This year, San Francisco ended with a balanced record of 81-81, which, while not terrible, left them on the outskirts of playoff contention. A promising run in August, where the team went 13-3, faded when September rolled around, ultimately leading them out of playoff eligibility.
“After careful evaluation, we decided that changing leadership was in the best interest of our team,” stated Buster Posey, the president of the Giants’ baseball operations. He added, “The last few months have been disappointing for everyone, and we just didn’t meet the expectations we set. Now we’re focused on finding new leaders who can guide us in a better direction.”
Interestingly, Melvin himself had expressed uncertainty about his future even after his option was confirmed during the final game of the season, where they clinched a decisive 4-0 win.
As for a new manager, the Giants are expected to act swiftly. Among the potential candidates is Bruce Bochy, a former manager who had a successful stint with the Giants and has recently finished a three-year run with the Texas Rangers.
“We’ve talked a lot about what the Giants’ standard is, and we definitely set the bar high,” Posey said. “I hold myself to those standards, too. My performance, along with the team’s success, will be evaluated. It’s important to maintain consistency in our leadership roles.” He didn’t set a timeline for the hiring process, stating, “I just want to make sure we do things right.”
With a robust resume, Melvin should find new opportunities soon. Over 22 seasons, he has managed various teams including the Arizona Diamondbacks, Seattle Mariners, Oakland Athletics, San Diego Padres, and the Giants, boasting a career record of 1,678-1,588. His stint with San Francisco led to a record of 161-163 in two years.
Team member Matt Chapman shared his gratitude for Melvin, stating, “I’m really thankful to play for him. He’s consistent and honest with the players; he’s always got our backs. He did his best with us, but, honestly, many of us probably didn’t meet our potential this year.”
