Texas Woman Charged with Murder of Fifth Husband

The case of Sarah Hartsfield, a Texas woman, has drawn significant attention as she’s accused of murdering her fifth husband using insulin. This latest chapter in the incident, which occurred in January 2023, involves the death of her husband, Joseph Hartsfield. Sarah has pleaded not guilty to the charges filed against her.

A grand jury indictment filed in February claims she intentionally caused Joseph’s death through methods that remain unspecified. Joseph’s obituary stated he passed away in the hospital, surrounded by his wife, due to complications from an ischemic stroke. Currently, Sarah is held at the Chambers County Jail with a bond set at $2 million.

According to prosecutors, as an Army veteran, Sarah allegedly manipulated her husband’s diabetes to administer excessive insulin and even delayed calling for help for several hours.

Joseph was hospitalized and succumbed a few days later. Investigators found multiple insulin pens by his bedside, raising questions about inconsistent statements made by Sarah.

In a statement when Sarah was arrested, Sheriff Brian Hawthorne expressed gratitude to deputies and detectives who questioned the circumstances surrounding Joseph’s death, which could have been labeled a natural illness rather than suspected murder.

On the defense side, it’s argued Joseph’s death could have been an unfortunate complication of his existing health problems rather than an intentional act by Sarah. The couple’s tumultuous history complicates matters; at 48, Sarah has been married five times.

Her first marriage was to her high school girlfriend, Titus Knornsild. They married young, but the relationship quickly fell apart. Knornschild, reflecting on their time together, stated that Sarah had threatened him during their separation. They officially divorced in 1995 but he claimed she continued to trouble him for years afterwards.

Her second marriage occurred in the mid-1990s and included an arrest in March 1996 for alleged assault during a domestic dispute. The charges were later reduced.

By the late 1990s, Sarah had remarried and her third marriage ended in divorce in 2018. During this time, she was engaged to David Bragg, whom she shot and killed in her home on May 9, 2018. Sarah claimed self-defense, and prosecutors had ruled it as such at the time of the shooting.

Following Bragg’s death, Sarah entered her fourth marriage in 2019, but divorced again by 2021.

Her latest marriage, to Joseph, took place in 2022. Friends and neighbors noted that Joseph was unhappy and intended to leave Sarah. On January 7, 2023, he experienced a diabetic emergency and failed to respond.

Authorities assert that Sarah injected Joseph with large amounts of insulin and delayed calling emergency services, leading to his death a few days later. The Harris County Medical Examiner attributed his death to complications from toxic insulin exposure.

In February 2023, Sarah was arrested and charged with murder. Her trial is set to commence on Tuesday following the election of the presiding judge.
