Swalwell Comments on Legal Issues Surrounding Comey
California Democratic leader Eric Swalwell recently spoke to CNN News Central about the indictment of former FBI director James Comey. Following this development, Swalwell mentioned that House Democrats will be taking a closer look at individuals associated with the Trump administration.
A federal jury charged Comey on Thursday, accusing him of lying to Congress during his testimony at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing back in September 2020.
Swalwell also expressed optimism regarding the Democrats regaining control of the House in the upcoming 2026 midterm elections.
“Well, first of all, we’re making it clear that we’ll be going to the majority in a year from now,” Swalwell stated. “We have all the intentions to do that, so we bring surveillance, accountability. We not only summon the Department of Justice, but also private parties who have made these drug deals with administrations, university campuses, entertainment companies, law firms, and more.”
“So, one thing is clear: everything comes out. I hope this discourages further deals like this. But let’s not forget, this all happened when Donald Trump was president. If anyone is suggesting this isn’t politically motivated, they should look closer at the context of his statements.”
Swalwell’s comments come at a time when President Donald Trump has had a series of notable legal successes.
For instance, Trump recently settled a $10 billion lawsuit concerning an interview with then-vice president Kamala Harris, who was his opponent in the 2024 election. Additionally, Trump paid $15 million to resolve a lawsuit linked to comments made during an appearance hosted by George Stephanopoulos on March 10, 2024.
