Court Blocks Job Cuts at US Global Media Agency

A US District Judge, Lois Lamberth, recently intervened to prevent significant job reductions at the US Global Media Agency (USAGM). In a firm ruling, she criticized Kari Lake, indicating that the actions taken during the Trump administration risked undermining the civil process if the plaintiffs opted to pursue it.

Judge Lamberth’s 19-page ruling expressed concern over the planned cuts, stating they would “cement” a failure to fulfill legal obligations in delivering credible news. The judge pointed out numerous statutory violations, including the shutdown of essential language services provided by the Voice of America (VOA), which was against explicit legislative mandates.

Interestingly, Lake was noted for asserting that Africa should be regarded as a vital area for media outreach, especially considering the reduction in programming targeting South America. In a striking move, Lamberth accused the Trump administration of misleading the courts and labeled the reductions as “uncertain,” claiming that the evidence was already shifting.

The layoffs, referred to as RIF, affected both VOA and USAGM employees, but Lamberth rejected attempts to spare those not directly within VOA’s purview. In her remarks, she criticized Lake and her team for, essentially, disregarding legal orders and exhibiting”brave indifference” to their responsibilities.

The judge’s order has temporarily preserved VOA’s workforce until October 14, 2025. Lake now faces the challenge of submitting a plan detailing how to restore legally required programming, which appears to be a substantial task.

Lamberth’s comments reflect a serious warning about the implications of the cuts, emphasizing that fundamental fairness must not be sacrificed in administrative procedures. She was clear: there are consequences for overreach, and maintaining the integrity of the media’s role is essential.
