Trump initiates inquiry into Fairfax schools regarding abortion claims

Trump Administration Orders Investigation into Fairfax County Schools

The Trump administration announced on Monday that it is requiring Fairfax County public schools to look into claims that some employees may have encouraged students to seek abortions without parental consent.

The Department of Education’s Office of Student Privacy Policy has instigated enforcement actions based on the Protecting Pupil Rights Amendment (PPRA).

One attorney representing the department stated, “It’s shocking to hear that some staff at Fairfax could be taking advantage of trust to promote abortion services to students without informing their parents.”

Investigation of Usage of School Funds

The administration has indicated that a social worker at Centerville High School may have coordinated an abortion for a 17-year-old student and even covered clinic expenses using funds from the student’s parents during 2021-2022. Reports also allege that social workers pressured another student into terminating a pregnancy.

Local news sources reported that an inquiry into these claims began as early as August, revealing that school officials were aware that abortions had occurred without proper parental notification.

Recently, Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin called on state police to investigate potential misuse of public funds in facilitating these abortions without parents’ knowledge.

Parent Notification Requirements

According to the PPRA, schools must inform parents and allow them to opt-out of their children undergoing certain medical procedures.

The SPPO has requested a formal response from Fairfax County Public Schools by October 17, including information on how they manage “sensitive health services,” particularly in relation to abortion procedures. They’re also looking for documentation concerning school staff’s promotion of abortion services to minors.

Jackson remarked, “The Trump administration finds this situation utterly unacceptable as such practices unfold in schools. We are committed to taking immediate action to restore parental authority and ensure the well-being of children is prioritized.”

As of now, Fairfax County Public Schools have not responded to requests for comment regarding this investigation.
