Trump imposes 10 percent tariffs on lumber imports and 25 percent on cabinets and furniture.

On Monday, President Trump announced a 10% tariff on wood imports and a more significant 25% tariff on furniture items, which include kitchen cabinets and vanities.

Back in March, Trump instructed for a review of timber imports, labeling this area as “critical” for national security, as well as for the economic strength and resilience of the U.S. manufacturing sector.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick was initially expected to provide his assessment to the President by November 26, but he expedited the process, delivering the report on July 1.

The findings indicated that the current rate and conditions of wood product imports are jeopardizing the economy, posing a permanent risk of timber mill closures and interrupting the supply chain, thereby limiting the domestic timber industry’s output capacity. This finding was part of a formal declaration that noted these challenges.

Lutnick also pointed out that due to the state of the U.S. timber industry, there might be an inability to satisfy the demand for timber products, which are crucial for both national defense and infrastructure.

Trump first unveiled his timber trade tax strategy in February, emphasizing its aim to incentivize businesses to return operations to the U.S.

“If they aren’t producing in America, they’ll incur tariffs. It’s that simple. But if they manufacture here, there are no tariffs,” he mentioned to reporters during the Future Investment Initiative Institute Summit.

The White House reported that the U.S. military allocates $10 billion annually for construction, where wood is commonly utilized. They are also investing in new wood product technologies, particularly crosslinking materials.

Trump’s statement underscored that issues surrounding wood are believed to adversely affect national security, economic well-being, and public health or safety in the U.S.

Through these tariffs, the administration aims to reduce “foreign dependence” and bolster domestic industries that are currently vulnerable.

Additionally, taxes on drug imports are set to take effect on Wednesday.
