Electronic Arts to Go Private in New Deal

Electronic Arts, the well-known video game developer, is making headlines as it moves to become a private entity.

In a significant acquisition, private equity firms Silver Lake and Affinity Partners, along with the public investment funds from Saudi Arabia, will take over the company.

Incidentally, Silver Lake has recently emerged as one of the new owners of TikTok, while Affinity Partners was established by Jared Kushner, who previously served as a senior adviser to former President Trump and is also Ivanka Trump’s husband.

EA’s shareholders will benefit from a cash offer of $210 per share, reflecting a 25% premium over the closing price recorded on September 25th, according to reports.

Earlier this year, EA’s stocks experienced a notable decline, primarily attributed to disappointing performance from titles like Dragon Age: Veilguard and EA FC 25. The company reportedly lost around $6 billion in market value largely due to poor sales and a perceived lack of genuine product dedication.

Specifically, Dragon Age: Veilguard fell short of its sales targets by nearly 50%. Fans criticized the game for emphasizing progressive identity politics, including choices around gender representation and character attributes, which some felt detracted from the overall gaming experience.

The acquisition is expected to finalize around June 2026 or early 2027, with EA’s headquarters in Redwood City, California remaining intact.

Andrew Wilson will continue in his role as CEO, asserting that the company aims to push the envelope in entertainment, sports, and technology.

Kushner remarked on EA’s excellence, noting its “world-class management team” and expressing nostalgia for playing their games during his childhood, now sharing that enjoyment with his children.

There’s a mix of optimism and skepticism surrounding the future of the company. Some industry insiders and fans speculate that being private might allow EA to focus more on developing games tailored to player interests, rather than yielding to public pressure. As Marty O’Donnell, the composer of Halo, mentioned, being privately held could foster a more creative and player-centered approach.

O’Donnell also shared a hopeful outlook regarding the new ownership, indicating a belief that they are in it for the long haul rather than planning to dismantle the company.

Ian Miles Chung, a gamer and content creator, echoed these sentiments, suggesting that the change might shift priorities back to player experiences instead of political messaging.

This sentiment of discontent isn’t unheard of, with some critics saying that EA has lost its way in recent years due to a focus on agendas they perceive to be unrelated to gaming.

Overall, as the company navigates these changes, it remains to be seen how it will adapt and respond to a market that is expressing its dissatisfaction with past decisions. Time will tell whether the fresh ownership will help revive EA’s legacy.
