Democrats stay quiet as controversy over illegal voting by non-citizens unfolds

Recently, Wes Moore, the Maryland Governor, along with other Democratic leaders, remained silent after the arrest of Andre Roberts, an undocumented immigrant who was discovered to be a registered Democratic voter in Maryland. Fox News Digital reached out to Moore’s office and state Senators Chris Van Hollen and Angela Onge Brooks, as well as Rep. Glenn Ivey, inquiring about the situation involving illegal immigrants registered as voters, but received no response by the publication’s deadline.

This week, the Maryland Freedom Caucus highlighted Roberts’ registration as an active voter, even though he hasn’t lived in Maryland for years and isn’t a U.S. citizen. Interestingly, an Iowa school superintendent was arrested recently due to a prior weapons charge, reportedly discovered with a loaded handgun.

On Tuesday, the State Board of Elections (SBE) informed Fox News Digital that a review through the Maryland Public Information Act indicated no voting history for an Ian Andre Roberts from Maryland. They further clarified that due to Maryland law safeguarding personal identification details from public disclosure, they couldn’t confirm whether he is a registered voter or not.

The SBE stated that unintentionally registering to vote while being ineligible isn’t considered a crime. They emphasized that voting is a precious right, upheld by countless sacrifices, and asserted that they wouldn’t deny voters based on incomplete or unfounded claims.

Meanwhile, Republican leader Matt Morgan, who chairs the Maryland Freedom Caucus, contended that the SBE’s comments only raise additional questions. The Maryland Freedom Caucus had sent a letter to the SBE on Monday, seeking answers about perceived gaps in the state’s election integrity.

Morgan pointed out, “The Election Commission’s explanation implies Mr. Roberts was registered by mere chance, which raises questions about how many others fall into that category and why he was automatically registered as a Democrat.” He expressed anticipation in receiving prompt replies to these inquiries.

In a related development, social media has been buzzing about the arrest of the Iowa superintendent, with reactions suggesting it’s quite a peculiar situation. Morgan elaborated that Roberts’ registration indicates he was eligible to vote in all levels of elections despite not being a U.S. citizen and apparently hasn’t lived in Maryland for nearly a decade.

In August, a letter from the Election Commission to the Department of Justice reflected apprehensions that sharing voter data with the federal authorities might lead to enforcement actions against Maryland residents based on immigration laws.

Roberts, formerly a public school superintendent in Des Moines, Iowa, was taken into custody last week by ICE after allegedly attempting to evade agents. Officials reported he had $3,000 in cash, a hunting knife, and a loaded Glock firearm at the time of his arrest.

Additionally, Maryland Senators have voiced concerns about ICE facilities, suggesting they conceal “evils that persist in the dark” after being denied access to them. Roberts entered the U.S. from Guyana on a student visa back in 1999 and was arrested by ICE following a removal order against him issued in 2024. He was appointed as head of Des Moines Public Schools in 2023, even though he had reportedly possessed illegal weapons since 2020.
