Tragic Loss of Iowa High School Football Star
A treasured Iowa football player, recognized for his kindness and competitive spirit, was tragically killed in an accidental shooting when a friend mistook him for a squirrel during a hunting outing, officials revealed.
Carson Ryan, a 17-year-old senior from Washington High School, was shot in the back of the head by others in his hunting group on Saturday afternoon near Brighton, roughly 12 miles from Des Moines, as squirrels were present in the area, as reported by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
He was swiftly taken to UI Health Care Medical Center, where he sadly succumbed to his injuries.
“Carson was fiercely competitive in everything he attempted,” said Nick Williams, an assistant coach for the Washington football team, at a vigil held for the young athlete on Sunday. “He had a passion for fishing and cherished his time with friends. More than that, he was a remarkable individual of faith, loved by many.”
His sudden passing resonated across approximately 12 nearby school districts. Urging students and staff to honor Ryan, many schools acknowledged his contributions in football, basketball, and track, proudly donning the black and orange colors of Washington High.
The Washington Demons Boys track and field members expressed their condolences, asking the community to support Carson’s mother, family, classmates, and teammates as they cope with this tragic loss.
Furthermore, Ryan actively participated in the school’s return court. His family has initiated a GoFundMe campaign, which has raised more than $52,600 to assist them during this difficult time.
“Carson brought brightness to his friends’ lives and everyone fortunate enough to know him,” stated the fundraiser. “His kindness, humor, and genuine spirit deeply impacted many, and his absence creates an immense void.”
The circumstances surrounding this fatal incident are currently under investigation.
