White House withdraws nominee for CFTC chair

The Trump administration has pulled its nominees for leading the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), as confirmed by White House officials on Tuesday evening.

Brian Quintenz, who is currently the global policy director at A16Z Crypto and previously served as a CFTC commissioner, was selected by President Trump in February to take on a larger role in overseeing the cryptocurrency sector.

Initially, it seemed like Quintenz would smoothly navigate the confirmation process. But his progress stalled within the Senate Agriculture Committee, leading him to accuse crypto billionaires Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss of hindering his confirmation.

He shared private messages exchanged with the Winklevoss twins earlier this month, indicating that Trump “may have been misunderstood.”

“I think these texts show their actions and what I wouldn’t agree to,” Quintenz mentioned. “From what I understand, after this exchange, they reached out to the President to request a pause on my confirmation, citing reasons not found in our texts.”

In the back-and-forth, Tyler Winklevoss asked Quintenz for his thoughts on a complaint his crypto exchange, Gemini, had brought before the CFTC inspector. Quintenz committed to conducting a “fair and reasonable review” of the situation.

He also cautioned Winklevoss to think carefully if someone from the CFTC was trying to “undermine or influence” his considerations.

Winklevoss didn’t seem pleased with Quintenz’s response and has questioned other CFTC candidates about how they plan to align with Trump’s agenda.

The White House is currently evaluating alternative candidates. Josh Sterling, a former CFTC official, is among those being considered. Additionally, Michael Selig, who heads the Securities and Exchange Commission’s Cryptody Task Force, and Tyler Williams, a counselor for Treasury Secretary Scott, are also reported as possible nominees.
