Expectations were high for the New York Mets at the start of the season. However, their recent performance—a 5-5 record over the last ten games and disappointing results in September—meant they missed the playoffs.
In light of this, Michael Kay, a radio host and announcer for the New York Yankees, shared his thoughts on the situation.
Kay used this occasion to comment on the behavior of some fans during both the offseason and the regular season.
“I truly sympathize with every fan I’ve encountered. I won’t downplay your frustration; there’s a particularly angry group of Mets fans who seem to have deep-rooted issues,” he said.
He continued, almost gleefully, “Honestly, I’m not too broken up about your suffering because you’ve brought this on yourselves. You’ve thrown insults my way about the Yankees and, meanwhile, you chose to support a team that just couldn’t pull through.”
Although his comments seemed directed at Mets fans in general, Kay clarified that he was specifically addressing those who lashed out at the Yankees due to missed opportunities with players like Juan Soto.
In a classic rivalry moment during a Yankees-Mets game, he claimed, “Soto was rather grumpy in the clubhouse,” and noted he faced backlash for his report.
“I have lots of friends who are Mets fans, and they’re understandably upset. But, honestly, why shouldn’t they be? This team has a knack for disappointment,” he added, expressing empathy for the genuine fans while hinting that there were others he found amusing in their distress.
“You know who you are—those who kept insisting that ‘Juan Soto looks happy right now.’ How mortifying,” he remarked.
“It feels like a turning point. The Yankees have had their struggles, but you seemed pleased when they faltered. Things might just be shifting now.”
Soto concluded the season with impressive stats: 43 home runs, 105 RBIs, and 38 stolen bases. Meanwhile, the Mets’ management is already pondering improvements for 2026 as the Yankees prepare for a Wild Card Playoff Series against the Boston Red Sox.
