Yankees on the Brink After Boone’s Controversial Move

Aaron Boone’s choice to pull pitcher Max Fried before the seventh inning might just be a pivotal moment for the Yankees this season.

Yankees’ play-by-play announcer has expressed some skepticism over Boone’s reasoning for taking Fried out after 102 pitches during a 3-1 loss against the Red Sox in the wild card round.

Boone explained that he aimed to bring in a left-handed pitcher to face Jarren Duran, who was the seventh lefty batter in the lineup. Fried had completed six innings, allowing a double play after an effective first half. He noted that Fried didn’t ask to be pulled, and he thought Luke Weaver matched up well against Boston’s lineup.

However, things quickly unraveled. The Red Sox surged ahead after three batters, with a walk, a double, and a single that brought in two runs.

After hearing Boone’s comments, Michael Kay admitted he was initially on board with the decision. But later, on the Network’s post-game show, he voiced his disagreement with Boone’s rationale.

“When I stepped into the studio, I thought the decision made sense,” Kay shared. “But then, hearing Boone say he’d rather give that last batter another chance after six innings? Well, that just didn’t sit right.”

Kay remarked that Boone’s comments seemed like a “blueprint move.” He emphasized that this wasn’t the ideal situation for Weaver, stating, “You should stick with the pitcher who’s already in there until he gives out everything he’s got.”

On the other hand, Red Sox manager Alex Cora kept pitcher Garrett Crochet in for a season-high 117 pitches, going 7 2/3 innings.

The Yankees, facing a dire situation, are now just one loss away from ending their season.
