Mark Teixeira Weighs in on Government Shutdown Debate
Mark Teixeira, a former New York Yankees player, voiced his support for the Democrats shortly before the Senate’s attempt to pass a bill aimed at preventing a government shutdown fell through.
Teixeira, who is running for Congress in Texas, took to social media to respond to a warning issued by House Speaker Mike Johnson. Johnson cautioned about plans by Senator Chuck Schumer and the Democrats to leverage a government shutdown as a political tool.
Teixeira stated, “This is exactly why I’m running. The Democrats are destroying our country and President Trump needs reinforcements to fight to get our country back.” His comments came just hours after the funding bill failed to secure enough votes in the Senate. The bill, which aimed to set budget priorities through 2026, had previously passed the House mainly along party lines.
President Trump commented that while Republicans don’t wish to see a shutdown, he warned of potential repercussions for Democrats if that happens.
Schumer responded at a press conference, expressing the Democrats’ willingness to collaborate with Republicans to reach a bipartisan agreement. “Like I said, Democrats didn’t want to close. We’re ready to work with Republicans to find a bipartisan compromise, and the ball is in their court,” he said.
Teixeira entered the race for Texas’ 21st Congressional District in August, following Chip Roy’s decision not to run for reelection.
