Upcoming Election Day and the Democratic Approach
The 2025 Election Day is approaching, and while it might not draw the same intensity as the 2026 midterms, Democrats need to shift their focus away from the past. The events of 2024 are behind us now.
To win future elections, Democrats must go beyond merely criticizing President Trump’s misguided actions and policies. It’s crucial to promote initiatives that resonate with the public, particularly those aimed at making life in America more affordable.
The Democratic candidate is currently in the spotlight, campaigning in Virginia and New Jersey, where the only gubernatorial races are taking place this year. A victory on November 4th could set a positive example for Democrats nationwide, especially as we gear up for the 2026 midterm elections.
In Virginia, former Rep. Abigail Spanberger is advocating for her Affordable Virginia Plan. Similarly, Rep. Mikie Sherrill, running for governor in New Jersey, is putting forth her Affordable Agenda. Both candidates aim to reduce costs in healthcare, housing, energy, and food.
Trump, on the other hand, seeks to divert attention from economic issues by framing Democrats as extremists who advocate for policies that diverge from mainstream American views. He has labeled Democrats as “Radical Left Madmen,” “Marxists, communists, fascists,” and “Enemies from within.” This portrayal overshadows both foreign threats and domestic concerns.
Spanberger and Sherrill astutely steer clear of supporting extreme policies that many Americans tend to oppose. Democratic candidates in 2026 should take a page from their book. If the party leans too far left, it risks alienating potential voters.
The goal for Democrats should be to present themselves as a party that prioritizes affordability and improvement for all citizens. They need to showcase their effectiveness compared to Trump and the Republicans by creating jobs, ensuring community safety, enhancing public health, and bolstering educational systems.
Moreover, Democrats must emphasize their commitment to principles such as respect, integrity, and accountability. This includes honoring the checks and balances essential to our government, alongside a steadfast dedication to constitutional values.
In contrast, Trump has dismissed these virtues, using the Justice Department as a tool against opposition and turning his presidency into a personal cash cow—a Billion Dollar ATM for himself and his family.
In pushing for policies that make America more affordable, Trump’s approach includes tariffs that raise prices on everyday goods and extensive deportations of immigrants from key sectors like agriculture and construction. This not only seems cruel but also fuels worker shortages, driving prices up further.
Right now, many Americans don’t view either party favorably. Polls from September 30th show Trump with a 45% approval rating, while 53% disapprove. It’s bad news for him, yet the Democrats fare worse in voter sentiment. Polls from September 21st indicate only 33% of Americans view the Democrats positively, with 59% unfavorably. If this trend doesn’t change, the Democrats will struggle in the upcoming elections.
Within the party, centrists, liberals, and progressives often have differing visions. Consensus can be tricky, but it’s vital to concentrate on unifying issues. Wasting time on internal conflicts only benefits the Republicans.
The path to success in an election isn’t just about rallying our base; we must reach beyond it to attract independents and moderate Republicans. The Census Bureau reported in April that 65% of eligible voters participated in the 2024 election, meaning 35% did not cast their votes. Engaging these individuals could significantly improve our chances in future elections.
An April poll from NBC showed that 24% of Americans felt only Republicans would advocate for them, while 23% believed the same of Democrats. A notable 38% felt neither party represented their interests. It’s concerning that of those who thought both parties fall short, a large portion didn’t vote last year.
Democrats have the responsibility to demonstrate that they can genuinely aid these groups in improving their lives.
Republicans have long framed the government as the enemy, and Trump perpetuates this narrative, advocating layoffs of 300,000 federal employees to diminish government capacity to meet public needs.
Traditionally, Democrats have stood with the working class, those striving to rise from poverty, communities of color, small business owners, and young individuals seeking educational opportunities. Our focus on these constituents aligns with the self-interest of most Americans, making our candidates worthy of support.
We uphold the US Constitution and its Bill of Rights, which face challenges under the current administration. Our commitment is to honor the pledge of ensuring “freedom and justice for all.”
As we approach the November elections, the message remains clear: with numerous races ahead in the 2026 midterm elections, we must stand united.
