ADL Removes 'Glossary of Extremism' Due to Unbalanced Criticism of Charlie Kirk

Following the assassination of Kirk, conservatives have criticized the Anti-Defamation League for including him and Turning Point USA in their “extremist glossary,” which has since been removed.

Reports indicate:

In reaction to pressure from notable right-wing figures like Elon Musk, Donald Trump Jr., and Charlie Kirk after the assassination, the Anti-Defamation League has taken Kirk and his organization off their extremism glossary, a resource that the organization uses to respond to hate and extremist rhetoric.

This glossary previously included over 1,000 terms connected to extremist beliefs and groups, attracting scrutiny when it was discovered that it contained references to Kirk and Turning Point USA following the tragic event.

An ADL representative confirmed that the glossary has been fully removed and that they no longer label TPUSA as an “extremist group.” The glossary is no longer accessible on the ADL’s website.

Criticism of the glossary included complaints that it misrepresented the ADL’s stance on “Christian identity.” Screenshots that circulated suggested the ADL opposed the concept broadly, instead of specifically addressing a movement characterized by extremist affiliations.

Additional feedback highlighted that the glossary lacked contextual information and was phrased in a confrontational manner. Conservatives have also condemned similar lists, like those maintained by the Southern Poverty Law Center, expressing concern that they incite violence against listed groups.

While materials about Turning Point USA remain on the ADL website, they’ve undergone some revisions. The initial claim stated: “Kirk has created a vast platform for extremists and far-right conspiracy theorists.”

In the updated version, it reads, “Kirk himself publicly condemned such groups and stated they do not represent TPUSA or its values.” It also acknowledges Kirk’s opposition to anti-Semitism and support for Israeli defense.

The revised description of Kirk and TPUSA still appears one-sided. It claims that “Individuals connected with TPUSA have previously made biased remarks regarding the black community, the LGBTQ community, especially regarding transgender individuals, and other minorities.”

This version fails to recognize TPUSA’s role in empowering black conservatives. Reports suggest that after Kirk’s assassination, “Charlie Kirk’s passing deeply affected a generation of young black conservatives, mourning not just the loss of a significant figure, but also someone who fostered a sense of belonging within their community.”
